The goalkeeper has to be the natural choice.
If your keeper ain't good enough to be your captain, they he ain't good enough to be your keeper.
And if your outfield players think they have time to be a captain, then they ain't good enough to be an outfield player.
I would never advocate having a goalkeeper as captain. Too far removed from the action. Hopefully! I would opt for Harry Davis out of the current squad. The obvious choice. However, if we sign an experienced midfielder on a 2 year deal then we should make him captain. As it stands at the moment in football, the captain has very little responsibility other than organising and most of that should be done before they take to the pitch. I don't like keepers or strikers being given the captain's armband.
The captain should be a player who has the respect of his teammates as well as the management. Ideally he should not be a stooge for the manager (in Spain the squad elect the captain to act as their go-between when they have issues with the Manager, for example) although he should be bright enough to implement any changes that the Manager specifies during a match. This is what made Toots an obvious choice at the start of last season. It's also the reason why, with a young squad, we aren't exactly overflowing with candidates!
I think it has to be an existing team member because it is beneficial if his teammates trust him. Looks like Harry to me, and he would be a shoo-in if his father weren't the manager, which is undoubtedly a complication. (Some think he is only in the team because of this; I believe he has to prove himself more than the others.) Other candidates? If he stayed (I know he isn't) Grant, Ray (give me strength), Tate (if we could tempt him) or Turton, who isn't a
