    captain next season

if we sign shackell and I say if would he be inline to regain captaincy as I don't see Keogh being on pitch or at club if he does sign ?

Assuming the rumours of why Shackell left us in the first place were true, do you think he could command the respect of the whole squad as captain? Or do you think it wouldn't be an issue anymore? I know many players have now moved on but there are a few who still remain.

I like Keogh and hope we would want to keep him, but like other posters have suggested, I think he would benefit from not being captain. And a new manager is the perfect opportunity to make the change without causing any embarrassment. I'd like to see Chris Martin given the role.

Totally agree with that 2.4, I like Keogh the player but some players rise to captaincy - Van der Laan, Stimac, Wright, McKay, McFarland - while it can have a detrimental effect on others. Don't think it really suits Keogh and his press interviews are poor too.

Plenty of other candidates now, with or without Shackell.

I like captains to be loud and vocal with passion, I don't like strikers either as captains so I think Chris Martin would be a big no no from me!

You mean like Robbie Savage and Kenny Burns?

Keogh has been told he will not be captain next season. He has been told he is welcome to stay (or find a club should he wish) but he will not be captain next season.

I would imagine Shackell will be the new captain.

I was thinking more like Tony Adams, Dave Mackay. John Terry, Steve Gerrard and Roy Keane players like that! Our last great captains where Robbie Van Der Laan and Stimac both passionate and vocal!

Is there any such thing as a true captain in football these days?

Players are usually far more savvy on the pitch and you usually have several leaders in a team.

I think Gerard was possibly the last of that breed.

Have to disagree there Rats. Whilst I agree some players show a bit more intelligence these days you still need someone to glue the whole thing together. 11 Captains equates to 11 headless chickens.
The orchestra needs a conductor to perform well. In football that has to be on the pitch in the middle of the action.
Someone to inspire by word and deed, cajole and rollick.
Keogh certainly tries by deed, not sure about the words!
If he is replaced it needs to be a defender or midfielder in my view not a forward.

Take your point Rattea, but I think John Terry - even though I can't stand him - might be 'the last of that breed'.

Think the best position to captain from is always going to be central defence or midfield but maybe Martin could have a leadership role to play up top, bit like a 'pack-leader' in rugby. Have to sort out his body language first though.
