Just to add on - a decision to sell a business goes much further than "is it doing well?" TMDS. Maybe they have internally forecast a downturn in sales, or haven't been able to find in-game advertising to keep it running. As with most apps and even social media, its valuation is based largely on potential, so if Activision values its potential at a higher value than King, then it would be shrewd to sell. Forget Derby County, it has naff all to do with us.

That said, Activision's due diligence would have unearthed all the negatives and influenced the price - yet they still paid a premium. the point is, when you are "doing well" is usually the right time to sell the business, rather than when its hit the buffers. Would you sell your car when it is in perfect working order or wait until it has been in a major crash?

[quote="roger_ramjet"]King Digital is a US listed company that is being acquired by Activision in a $ 5.9 billion deal. It is a 100% cash deal (hence not share for share) and is being done at a 25% premium on market value. Mel's 12% shareholding thus converts into a pretax sales proceed of around $ 700 million. logically if there is a 25% sales premium then it was worth $ 560 million a short while ago, so his fortune would have been uplifted by $ 140 million.

As a minority 12% shareholder in a listed company, it would not have been Mel's decision to sell up, as TMDS naively assumes, but rather a corporate decision probably by institutional investors in King who saw a nice pay day and probably have little interest in the underlying business as such.

Hence its a simple exit strategy allowing investors to cash in - not a conscious decision by a minority shareholder to refocus on DCFC! If the business was dear to Mel's heart, no doubt he could reinvest i

    It isn't his decision.

There are many reasons, as Roger has mentioned above. His "car-crash" analogy works pretty well.

    It isn't, at all.
