Clough is a very good manager and I'm pleased he's back at a club he holds close to his heart.

There's a lot of mixed opinions on here but how many other managers would have stuck around or done any better than what he did with Derby

Yes it's a pity that the Brewers have now lost two excellent managers in Rowett & Jimmy F Hasselbank. Victims of the clubs own success. I think Ben Robinson is going for the safe long term option with Clough. League One stability is probably where Burton are happy to consolidate.

Ive just read an interview he had and says that the players have overachieved. I would be seriously upset if I was a player His man management skills are iffy to say the least. Pleased hes gone from our club but cant understand why people go on and on about him

Its usually in response to people who don't really understand football slagging him off

Opinion will always be divided on his merits, he is an average manager in my view and if his hadn't been Clough he would not have got the "free pass" he did at Derby for what were 4 and half mediocre years.

Yes he brought stability, but compared to what Lambert did at Norwich - bottom of League 1, thrashed 7-1 by Colchester when he took over, to two successive promotions or what Dyche did with a Watford team dependant upon youth players and cast offs, Clough was no miracle worker.

But hey as the years drift past the legend will grow about what he did and he is but a footnote in history for Derby.

Agree with the history bit. When he was in charge what really annoyed me was his slagging off the players in a public forum. Yes they may have screwed up but he picked on certain players and not on others. He had no ambition and no tactics and jeez was he boring which came out in the football played. As for stability was it really all him no it wasnt but alas people will always think he did work miracles !!! Even us none football people hey Triz

    Nigel Clough:

    Positives:
    - Never once complained about a terrible budget
    - Good record against the Red dogs
    - Brought some real gems for next to nothing (e.g. Bryson, Ward, Brayford, Buxton, Eustace)
    - Put emphasis on the academy and gave young players a chance (e.g. Hughes, Hendrick, Bennett)
    - Some talentless players had some of their best years under him (e.g. Robinson, Savage)
    - Got rid of big earners
-Stablised the club when it was needed most

    Negatives:
    - Awful man management, falling out with players (e.g. Commons, Bywater, Maguire)
    - Boring and negative tactics
    - Bizarre substitutions
    - Some really terrible signings (e.g. Sammon, Porter, Davies, Maguire)
    - Refusal to ever look abroad for players
    - Less than inspiring backroom staff

"Bought some gems....Eustace" The words "gem" and "Eustace" have no place in the same sentence.

Yes he gave youngsters a chance because he had no other options... had no cash to buy much in his first couple of years.

I think we have to analyse his tenure in two periods - in the early part he did a decent job stopping further deterioration. That acieved and with the club settled into a lower mid table slot ( a sort of Huddersfield in todays table) he entered phase 2 which was pretty poor. Some money was made available but results barely improved and the entertainment value (with the odd exception) was dire.

He is a curates egg of a manager - can cope with crisis or disaster but cannot develop success. So its an odd choice for Burton who dont need a crisis manager but rather a driver on to better things manager.

Mid table finish this year for them I reckon
