I guess it was ambitious, but definitely not brilliant.

Just goes to show that the life of a lower league player was not all that lucrative 4-5 years ago if his taxes were still being fully settled through PAYE. I was filing tax returns before leaving for the US and that was 20 years ago.

Self assessment threshold is £100,000 for an employee CA.
Even today there will be a minority of league 2 players earning that much. Were you self employed?

No, but the threshold has obviously risen over the years. As you say there will be League two players were in 2011/2 and maybe still are on less than 2K/week.

    Average salaries 2014/5

    Premier league £1.7m
    Championship 324k
    League 1 69k
    League 2 40k

I expect these figures are skewed by young players on very small wages but show that perhaps wages aren't as high as we all think.

From those numbers it's easy to see how when a team starts falling it can rapidly snowball into financial woes. Maybe someone should be brave enough to write up players' contracts on a percentage of average basis e.g. if in the Premiership you are on 100% of average and the club gets relegated your contract adjusts to 100% of the Championship average. For parity it could also work the other way round for promotion. Nice thought but unlikely!
