After what we saw in Marseilles and elsewhere in June I reckon the best 'independent and unofficial' advice is...don't visit Russia 2018...stay at home, save yourself a bundle and remove the risk of life threatening injuries. Cheers John.

I'll take the survey, but I have a question - Do Russians realise how unpopular they and their nation are worldwide?

The intelligent ones do, and they also know why - intelligent urban professionals here hate Putin as much as anyone, and also despair at the behaviour of some of their fellow countrymen on holiday in Turkey, Egypt etc. Having said that, the place does get a pretty raw deal in the Western press. St Petersburg is one of the finest cities in the world, from architecture to restaurants to art to an incredible craft beer scene. It really does have everything. And while there are a lot of morons just like anywhere, the majority of the people here are absolutely fantastic.

Many thanks for filling in the survey. Being your guide sounds good, as long as you like quality beer. I'll even do it for free if the result at Pride Park later this season goes the same way as it did yesterday!

Sorry Tyke, not being disrespectful to you or the Russians. Great culture but, temporarily or otherwise, currently run by crooks and I wouldn't go near during 2018, our own lunatics put me off such occasions let alone the Russian ones.

It is absolutely run by crooks, I agree. Not sure whether that's a reason not to visit a country though. If I refused to visit any country that was run by crooks, I'd be severely limiting my travel options!
