All this free stuff is not free though is it ?
Prioritising ? So you think it's okay that my mates mum and dad who live in a house worth upwards of 400k get a free bus pass and prescriptions that are paid for through taxes from people earning the living wage ?
My mate who earns 50k and his missus who earns 25k kids get free food ? He even says it's a scandal and he would pay for it if his kids had it. It's all wrong, nothing is free, us taxpayers are paying for the people that can easily afford to pay for it themselves.
As for the council tax not going up, look at the state of our roads, bin collections etc.., councils are struggling and the tax should go up. The SNP don't put it up because it makes them look good. Handout after handout in benefitts as well
The roads in Scotland are full of potholes but in Scotland I'm sure you have noticed has indeed extreme weather ( expansion and contraction) conditions hence the upkeep here is indeed an incredible job year after year.
I can't speak about people you may know
But the working classes do indeed benefit from free bus passes and the like.
But I do agree folk on big pensions and the like shouldn't really need it and we should pass that saving on elsewhere like the roads or indeed elsewhere.
I won't be claiming any of the above its the same with paracetamol the NHS pays big money for them when we can get them from tesco for around 16p.
Always wondered why the NHS don't bulk buy from Tesco.
This is Labour's "Something for nothing" jibe and look where it got them. Its often fairer and more efficient for services to be paid for centrally through general taxation, which is itself based on ability to pay. Free prescription charges for example costs £57 million, a relatively small sliver of the £34 billion Scottish budget, but up to half of that saving will be lost through the cost of constructing a new bureaucracy to manage the transition and identify and collect from those who are to pay in future. The nugatory savings from bus passes or the winter fuel allowance are hardly going to pay off the national debt. Free personal care for elderly people is expensive at a cost of £360 million, but much of this is saved in the NHS by helping keep older people independent in their own homes rather than occupying beds in hospitals. Its not just Populist policies Bodie there also clever policies. Perhaps you should put your energies into opposing Trident that in itself would save 200Bn.
I rather like the idea of those with the broadest shoulders paying a bit more. As do the progressive parties in the Scottish Parliament who wanted a modest tax rise for those earning a bit more. Unfortunately, most people voted for the non-progressive low-tax parties like the Tories and the SNP.
