Bank Holiday Groundhopper's Report 29/08/16 - Bromley v Eastleigh

Conditions - blue sky and very hot

The Hayes Lane ground is hidden away down anotherr un-named lane, about 20 mins walk from Bromley South station, several buses go past the entrance to the ground too. It's a bit like Parkgate FC, but with a much bigger stadium.

Admission - adults £15, concessions £10, programme £2-50. Several bars in clubhouse, but no real ale (pint of keg Tetley's £3-80)

Had a brief chat with Ronnie Moore, as he took the players onto the pitch for their warm-up. Asked him to sign my "Millmoor Personalities" book, thanked him for his work for the Millers and wished him good luck with Eastleigh. He looked to be in good nick, and Kevin Watson (assistant manager), and Eastleigh ex-Millers players, Ryan Cresswell and Jason Taylor, were instantly recognisable too.

Eastleigh made a great start - after 3 minutes the French ex-Sunderland striker Mandron hit a low shot in at the Bromley keeper's near post after some good work down the left. The young, lanky Mandron was constantly causing problems for the Bromley defence. After 25 minutes an Eastleigh free kick was headed back across goal from the left and Mandron made no mistake with a hard low shot from close range.

Cresswell was lucky to escape a yellow card following a clumsy challenge when Bromley managed a rare counter-attack., but on 35 minutes the Bromley player, Dymond, was sent off following a two-footed lunge at Jason Taylor, which sent him somersaulting. The challenge looked more clumsy than malicious, but the referee had a good view, and probably felt that he had no other option.

Eastleigh's Constable had a shot from the right that the keeper got his fingertips to, but Bromley scrambled the ball away from the corner kick. The heat was starting to affect some of the players, and Eastleigh keeper, Flitney, was booked for timewasting, after trying to slow the game down a bit.

Mandron continued to look dangerous for Eastleigh, and although Bromley managed the odd counter-attack, the Eastleigh defence looked comfortable . At this level ("fifth division") Cressy and Jaybo looked as quick as anybody on the pitch and Bromley had no pacey players to cause any problems. HT 0-2

Bromley made a brave attempt to get back into the match after the break, with a good shot from substitute Cunnington, and then Pavey had a shot that went narrowly wide of the post. The comeback from Bromley didn't last long though, Eastleigh winger Howells now was starting to cause the Bromley defence problems too. On 62 minutes, after some good work by Dawson the ball was laid back to Howells, who slid the ball past the advancing keeper to make the score 0-3.

Soon after a great headed "goal" from Cresswell, following a free kick, was disallowed for pushing, but Eastleigh soon struck again. Mandron played a lovely one-two with Dawson on the edge of the penalty area and Mandron completed his hat-trick by hitting a low hard shot that the Bromley keeper could only deflect into the net. 0-4.

Eastleigh continued to dominate the game and on 77 minutes another good Eastleigh attack down the right wing led to the ball being squared across the six-yard box for Dawson to tap in at the far post and make it 0-5. Eastleigh just conserved energy after that, and brought their three substitutes on. FT 0-5

It had been a great performance from Ronnie's lad, and although the Eastleigh team had been put together at fairly short notice, the players linked up very well, with plenty of accurate passes, crosses, good one-twos,etc.

On my way back , I dropped into the Wetherspoons pub oppposite Bromley South station, and got talking to a couple of "neutral" fans who had been to the Bromley v Eastleigh game. It turned out that one was a Crewe fan, who had been their club's official photographer for the record-breaking Crewe1 Millers 8 game back in the 1970's and had provided photos for the Rotherham Advertiser, Sheffield Star, and even Shoot magazine, from that game . I asked him if there was anything unusual about the game, eg injuries, freak weather conditions, etc. He replied "No, not that I can remember, but every time Rotherham had a shot at goal, it went into the net"

Yea seen all those clips acido many times..two fab teams yours with glavin, banks, mcarthy and that trevor aylott..and our own ronnie, rod fern , seasman, and the great tony towner..you didnt win every one though as i recall and the year we both got promoted was memorable..
Just cant quite remember who were champions that year though... (tongue in cheek)..

he wouldnt be everybodys choice now i dont think...but at least you know what your getting, and we cant afford any more gambles..he went after the chesterfield drubbing and he never had the players like steve evans had at his disposal ..he'd sort that defence out straightaway..and on another point, how many goals do we have to concede before stubbs goes..if we end up in a bottom 4 battle again, with the goals conceded, we're already a point behind..id have him back rather than gamble...
