You said the Scottish government based their priorities on Barnett funding, which is technically correct. But they can raise £3bn extra via separate taxation. No Scottish government has chosen to do this so far, including labour.

We are in agreement that so far Scottish Governments have only used funding made available from UK revenues calculated using the Barnett Formula. We are also in agreement that Scottish Governments have the power to raise additional revenue via varying the tax rates in Scotland. Is this a first - people ageeing on SF.net? :-)

The next step is to discuss why no party in Scotland uses these powers, nearly 20 years after they were granted. Labour say they will but they are known liars.

Would you vote for a party that would take more money out of your pocket? This can only be tackled when the world thinks about the greater good and not self interest.

As it stands Holyrood can only increase all the tax rates simultaneously or reduce all the rates simultaneously. There's nae flexibility for example the poor guy on just above the minimum wage would be paying much more of his wage than the guy on 50.000 p/y. So if t5hey did raise taxes the poorest would be hit worst. What we need is permission to vary tax bands and WM won't allow this.

If those who say they want Scotland to be different really mean it they would stop looking outwards for someone to blame and start looking inward for answers and solutions.

If it was to be used to make the lives of people in Scotland better I would be more than happy to do it.

Would the Willie Bravehearts be happy to do it though?

The SNP are happy to reduce Air Passenger Duty tax which has no effect on those on minimum wage but helps millionaires.

before labour became what they are, plenty people voted for them knowing they would raise taxes. The key aspect is what would those extra revenues be spent on, obviously labour wasted every penny they raised and bankrupted the country. Labour are the most incompetent political party in history, anyone who votes for them needs their head checked. Personally, it wouldn't affect me so I can't say the SNP should raise taxes.

This would be the increased spending that the NHS down here say they haven't actually had, and are unlikely to...
