He really didn't suit Sam's style, and I suppose you could say his subsequent career has proved he was destined to be a "nearly-man".
All the same, playing off a target-man, I reckon he could have been a 20-goals-a-season type.
He's scoring a lot of goals in Cyprus now. Not at all sure what the standard is, so that might not mean anything. I just feel he had a degree of promise that has never quite been fulfilled.

YES!! Another good shout! I liked Matty, although his frame was rather slight, he was a nice footballer. It was a pity we let him go when we did.

    Paul Dickov.
He was about as close to Speedie you could get. And all this discussion about Rhodes, when you look at how Dickov played, fans would always get behind a guy like him. Not always blessed with bags of natural ability, but he more than made up for that by being a non stop nuisance for 90mins. Fantastic penalty taker, never ever let you down. He did well for us in a relatively short amount of time.

A bit off cue, but from same 'stable' an maybe wrong place wrong time consequence, but Paul Gallagher was in a very similar position where he just couldn't quite make his mark. But after much testing has found his feet and position at PNE. And from what I have seen turns in some nice cultured performances. Down to Simon G ( who was himself a fine supporting midfielder) .?

He had reputation of being very very quick , but unfortunately as we found out , not necessarily with a ball at his feet - except for that one and only time - I seem to recall .

I love this one! Donis has a son .....who plays for an Italian side (I want to say Genoa? ....I'll check) and he is very highly rated.
His son was born in BLACKBURN seriously

A very strange appointment that IMO ( alongside Wes Brown!).
He may well have had a shirt, but don't think it ever appeared on the pitch, could be wrong though.
I can only assume he was trying to get into coaching/management and maybe someone was trying to give him a leg up. I could have said 'sniff', but that would have been taken out of context I think! In any event his 'history' doesn't really help him towards being offered a responsible position.

As for 'previous greats' wearing the shirt : is John Radford too far back for you Champs? Can't recall his record with us (without checking) though. In terms of adding to our not too far back listing.

    Great thread this !

He is a bit Despair, I was born '76 and my first game was about 84. My Dad and Grandad went on about him though.
