Thread: Favourite Away grounds

    Favourite Away grounds

Tonight’s trips to Fulham got me thinking about my favourite away grounds ..

my top 3 in no particular order

    1. Fulham (great character and always a laugh)
    2. Emirates (the boxes out many top end hotels to shame)
    3. Nou Camp (for very obvious reasons)

Could easily have put half a dozen more into the top 3 for different reasons (such as first away game etc).

anyone else have a soft spot for any particular away stadia?

1)Highfield Road Coventry - in the open air behind the goal - watching virtually the whole ground celebrate when we scored. Par for the course whenever we played there.

    2) Villa Park - we were in the Holte End during the Championship season. We kept quiet (it was not a time of good relations between Villa and Leeds) and the whole stand was silent except for two other Leeds fans who were shouting and screaming about 10 feet from us each time we scored. Lol - they got away with it too....

    3) Malta international stadium - watched a world cup qualifier against Slovakia there with some friends. Women got in half-price, and there were about 200 people there in total in a stadium that looked like it should hold about 20000. Got a great tan though.

Not sure the last one counts as an away game though - i might get banned for going off-topic?

the traditional grounds were the best , maine road , villa park , hillsbrough, goodison , roker park, etc stadiums with proper atmostpheres .

far better than the, modernised, soulless , concrete blocks that many clubs play in today .

the introduction of all seater stadiums, and outrageous ticket prices , killed the game for an whole generation of fans.

I don't like Leeds Utd,just for the fact they rip off all the away supporters with their ridiculously high ticket charges to watch a third rate team who are no longer famous( only for being dirty) ..

I was just wondering why I'd never been to Fulham - although they weren't in our division when they were (possibly?) the nearest ground to where I was living for about four years or so, many moons ago.

I also like Villa Park - a proper football ground and definitely enjoyed watching Shutty score at the Nou Camp (or is it Camp Nou?).

All the European games were at least an experience, even if we seldom over-performed when I went (Monaco and TSV excepted).

Tend to prefer older grounds in general - especially those that suddenly appear out of nowhere in residential areas. They were usually the most dangerous though!

I'm not quite sure what I'd make of our ground as an away fan.

Depends if the crowd was up for the game or not, I guess?

..... " living near Fulham" - Sloane ranger then Org ?

Funny thing 'tho I liked visits to Crystal Palace & ended up living in Sydenham S26 for two years cos of it.

My favourite 3 grounds following Leeds ........

In UK of 1970/99....Anfield,Old Trafford & Highbury in the days when away fans stood behind the goal end.(Brian Flynn '81)!

In UK 2000/18....... Emirates,White Hart Lane & Selhurst Park.

In UK grounds now gone ......The Dell,Maine Road & Ninian Park.

    In Europe ........ Real Madrid/Bernabéu 2001,Stadio Olimpico/Roma 2000 & San Siro AC Milan 2000.

Most farcical away ground moment ..... missing most of the second half at the Withdean stadium Brighton during our League 1 campaign season due to my gold bracelet lucky charm falling down the plug hole in a portable ladies loo at halftime ... stewards were not helpful so my brother basically dismantled all the pipe work to locate it amongst other 'items' within the piping. Now that ground/athletic track may be one of the worst venues for football I've visited.
