If it's true that Hardy became aware Nolo had applied for another job during the summer, who knows what little contingency plans he might have started drawing up, even if it was just in his mind at that point? As you say, if Kewell just happened to make a good impression on him around the same time, one thought could have led to another.

It's all ifs, buts and maybes though. I'm just trying to get a handle on why Harry Kewell would have emerged as such a strong frontrunner seemingly from nowhere.

Ah, now that was a throwaway comment by someone on here, if I remember. Does anyone know if there is any truth in it? Surely KN couldn't have the brass neck to have applied for another job and then complain of broken promises when he didn't keep his current one?

No idea if it's true, and in any case it's not that unusual even if he did. Free country and all that. Lots of people secretly (and in some cases not so secretly) apply for other jobs and then carry on regardless with their current employer if they don't get them.

Read somewhere that he’d applied for the Shrewsbury job. Must have been a blow when some bloke from non league got it instead.
