If it's true that Hardy became aware Nolo had applied for another job during the summer, who knows what little contingency plans he might have started drawing up, even if it was just in his mind at that point? As you say, if Kewell just happened to make a good impression on him around the same time, one thought could have led to another.

It's all ifs, buts and maybes though. I'm just trying to get a handle on why Harry Kewell would have emerged as such a strong frontrunner seemingly from nowhere.
