Seriously though Roma Im not a golf fan, so this isnt my thing. But I do know it means a lot for Europe to win this trophy, especially when they are meant to be a brilliant American team they are up against etc.

If you think of it like football then yes the Americans had on paper a Real Madrid team and Europe were certainly underdogs with a mixture of rookies and experience in their ranks. I didn't fancy us I admit and thought we'd do very well to actually win. The youngsters in the European team were my main concern but they handled it beautifully rising to the occasion under big pressure. We won quite easily but the spade work was already done in the previous 2 days play for me. Some outstanding golf played and the Americans had no answer.

Roma tha reight. What a spectacle seeing keen rivalry and lovers of the sport all as one. However, on a more sour note i think the crowd pushed the boundaries for me at times but that's what its become. If it carries on I can see many jumping on the bandwagon simply because it's fashionable and the tournament becoming a circus which would be so sad.

It's a fine line isn't it mate , generally speaking it's the only event in golf that has this type of partisan supporters , americans included .

I draw the line at personal abuse , heckling whilst the players are addressing the ball .

I'm cheering when the yanks dump the ball in the water or miss an easy putt so I can understand spectators on the course will just as likely follow suit .

I actually enjoy needle in sport , enjoyed it when I played , however when the games over then its over and you shake hands and have a beer together .

    That's the way I played anyway .

It means as much to the americans too .

Generally speaking the american team are always full of superstar golfers but Europe always seem to play above themselves and have the better team spirit .

It makes for a fascinating contest and it rarely disappoints .

Agreed. I felt the set up at the 1st hole said it all. 7000 is and looks amazing but I cant help but feel it was purely set up for something that doesn't belong in the game. I felt the heckling was out of order on practice swings, in fact embarrassing.

The fans at the Open are renowned for their conduct and knowledge. Many foreign players have commented on this over the years. Certain things have crept in slowly though over the years. Lets not get silly please but like most sports it's very costly to attend, folk pay their money and have their own ideas. Who am i to argue with people who put their money where their mouth is and make the effort?

Darts has gone this way with spectators and its turnover has massively increased in recent years. The line has been crossed imo but the players turn a blind eye and are now millionaires. The game has become very lucrative losing it's traditional values. I think some darts fans go to see walk ons, razzamataz and have a sing song rather than watching the action. Shame and if golf goes this way i probably couldnt watch it anymore

Have you ever watched the Mosconi Cup thing, which is the same every year in 9-Ball pool.
This is Europe v America as well and its odd to see us cheer for German & French & Italian & Spanglish players lol.

I do love the mosconi cup. It reflects the rivalry but in 9 ball pool rather than golf. Obviously not the traditions and history of the Ryder cup but I like it because I like most sports. The mosconi cup has grown but in the sense of it becoming increasingly loud mouthed and volatile. Typical Barry Hearn opportunism for discovering sporting commodities. Crowds are huge now compared to years ago at the Mosconi cup. The man sure knows how to drum up business and feed the thousands al give him that.

As mentioned before this started in 91 and The War On The Shore .

The Americans were wounded , we'd held the Ryder Cup since 85 and they didn't like it , whipped themselves up in to a right frenzy that year and it's been that way ever since on both sides of the pond .

The Americans don't actually play too many of their sports at international level , american football , baseball or basketball so in a way I get it that they perhaps tap in to this event the way they do on american soil .

I think european golf fans have just responded to that and thought well you can have some of that over here too if that's the way it is .

The worst behaviour by far is always on american soil .

We haven't got anywhere near 1991 or Brookline in 99 .

I read captain Mark James book on the 99 Ryder Cup called " In To The Bear Pit "

They were at it even at the offical dinner on the eve of the event and we all know what followed .

It's tribal pass now and it's unlikely to change .
