I have always used that expression when I tell lads not to run around dribbling and beating a man (sometimes twice) but

To "let the ball do the work" and pass it off first time achieving a better result whilst lessening the risk of being caught in possession.

"Let the ball do the work" rather than over finesse by running with it.

It comes down to the same thing as you say Saxo but with a small degree of criticism for the player not letting the ball do the work.
