Thread: Getting older and declining health.

  1. #31
My mother is 100 and is old age apart is both mentally and physically fit. My 72 year old brother has Parkinsons as does my sister in law. Their quality of life is lousy. My fear is I will be arranging for my mum to attend my brother's funeral.

It’s pretty evident you have your mums genes mate.

You have another 40 years to look forward to.

About 5 years ago I bought a kitchen from a supplier in Wollaston who I’ve known for years.

He was 62 years old and casually mentioned he’d been at a family meal that weekend with his gran!

Think about that....,,having lunch out with your fit and able and mentally sharp gran when you’re 62.

Another bloke I know was moaning in the newsagents about his mum still being constantly “on his case”.......he was 85 years old!

I've come back because this thread topic is of interest.

Going back to the days of Dave Valder and his posts, one of them questioned the age of posters; I think I came out as the oldest then, and from what has been said above, most likely I remain having that status, if you can call it that.

Getting old isn't funny, but you must make the most of it as time on Earth is in comparison with others things quite short. Yes, as one ages, certain problems of health take over your life, but you have to think positively and accept each day as it arrives and try to achieve something, even if pain tries to stop you. I'm 82 in 2 weeks time and I suppose it is only the last 5 or so years when the old body has started to let me down. Looking back at a life of sporting activity, embracing football, cricket, swimming, gymnastics, rugby, squash, badminton, golf, I realise that I pushed my body to its limit, but would I, if I could go back in time change this? NEVER, as I have had such good friendships through out. Friends and close ones are those that matter and I try to keep that strong in my thoughts.
My wife (same age) and I celebrate our Diamond Wedding Anniversary this year. Now that is some achievement and something that you oldies , if married, should strive towards, yourselves, forget about places like Dignitas.

All the very best to you all, especially those friends that have met with off here. Take care, and keep taking the pills!!

Now, where did I put my dentures, wig, and walking sticks. Only joking!!
Well said and all the very best to you 48

[QUOTE=mickd1961;39162984]It would seem logical that running would cause/aggravate my sciatica but with me it doesn’t quite work like that.

I usually walk the first mile or two and then jog the 2.5 miles home stopping for a few steps every half mile so I’m not pounding out vast mileage.

My knee is a strange one.

I slipped on outdoor wooden steps a couple of years ago and tried to right myself in mid air and landed six steps further down and twisted my right knee before landing further down on hard ground.

I amazed the people with me by retaining my balance but the 8-10ft drop shocked and hurt me.

Bits of loose cartilage showed up on the scan but no ligament damage which surprised me.

Kicking a ball really aggravates is and twisting and turning are to be avoided so my “Michael Owen” routine in back garden football is at an end!

I find I can run on it though,I’m okay in a straight line......I get no swelling either.

I basically “manage” my various injuries but this sciatica has no remedy and I just have to wait until things click back into place naturally.

The knee situation annoys me,I know I need an op but I’m scared of that because I’ve got many friends who’ve got worse knees after going through this. I had both knees done 28 years ago but it’s more risky to get a good result the older you get.

I can still move quite quickly and I think that I could be really s h I t hot at walking football but because shooting kills my knee I’d be like the 57 year old Rondon!

I really do think us lot should arrange a get together,I think it’s be a great laugh given our “black” humour and general views on things.[/QUOTE

    Can’t believe that!

    Isn’t Rondon already 57?

It’s the one part of me that works without medical assistance Des so I might as well enjoy it!
