Take away the one cup he has won , would you still say that.

Of course he has been and that’s the problem.

All of the other appointments in the last 25 years have been terrible and that’s what makes him look better than he actually is.

I don't think any of them were great . or maybe given the spell McInnes had with sevco demoted , those previous managers might have fared better given his time slot
But best of a bad bunch isn't saying very much at all. Splitting hairs, because I'm uncomfortable of using 'best' in relation to mcInnes It's possible he would be least worse.

Calderwood got the dunt despite only once finishing outwith the top four , and even that was just by two points, when we were in with a shout of finishing fourth right up to the last kick of the final game that season. Showing that the expectations and demands at Aberdeen are , by any reasonably objective view , quite high.

And as is often mentioned by Dons fans, there isn’t much confidence in the board appointing a decent manager again. I’d guess the board themselves recognise the difficulty of getting a good replacement. which would beg the question......Why would they take the risk of getting rid of the manager who by far and away has been the best appointment they’ve made in about 25 years ?
Calderwood got sacked for the amount of times we got knocked out of cups by lower league teams and it was obvious he was never going to be able to stop us getting beat from lower league opponents.

I always thought his contract was up or was it that he just signed a new one?

The paper they released explains what their on the park ambitions are and how they won't spend big so everything is hunky dory.

Calderwood and Milne didn't get on and he didn't have his contract renewed. The rest of the managers were awful and deserved the sack long before they were actually sacked.

It's a sad state of affairs when we settle for something because we know Milne will make a chunt of it otherwise.
Correct I believe, Calderwood was appointed on the advice of Willie Miller but Milne didn't take to him (so his judgement isn't that bad). Calderwood's team beat Septic 4-2 in January, interviewed afterwards he starts mumbling how "every manager has a shelf life" in an attempt to court suitors, then proceeds to win only three further games (East Fife, Hamilton & ICT) in the run up to the final game of the season against Hibs.

Despite winning that final game, qualifying for Europe, Milne could've conceivably left him in post for another six months; however, because of his dislike for Calderwood, he fired him. Which, in-retrospect, was foolish without a suitable succession plan in place.

This situation is different though. Whenever McInnes is seriously linked to a job, Milne and co ramp up the platitudes and talk about McInnes being in place for years to come. McInnes begins to feel untouchable. He gets his pals, notably Lennon and Rodgers, to court him in the press for Scotland job but then suddenly we're told he's going nowhere (although we've yet to hear that from the horse's mouth I think). However, all is good, McInnes was being courted by another suitor; therefore, everyone back round the table to increase the McInnes £750,000 annual salary (or at least that's what I've heard).

A manger should not feel either too secure nor too insecure in his position. There's a balance which AFC are not achieving...

I’ve never heard about Calderwood and Milne not getting on, but I can well believe it as I reckon Tango would’ve been an abrasive , dislikeable sort. And I thought he was sacked right after the last game of the season when he still had a year to go until his contract ran out.

Craig Brown didn’t get sacked, but resigned when he was told his contract wouldn’t be getting renewed....I think.

Was he not on a rolling 1 year contract?
Officially they left by mutual consent, which means there would have been an agreement for him to go, essentially paid off.
I recall years afterwards Calderwood bleating on about being sacked

There is no point in beating Celtic and then dropping points against so-called lesser teams

Calderwood was slightly different. Remember the good old days when every fan knew that Milne was a sack, he hired Willie Miller as his meat shield. I don’t think JC was Milnes man & there was a bit of a personality clash there. McInnes & Milnes bromance is unshakable & he’s got the job as long as he wants it because his boss is more incompetent than him. Like I said, it must be great.
