almost - have a screen (wife and I occasionally access Netflix etc) but not a licence - busy life means I don't miss live TV or iPlayer - should be impartial, but isn't - would be the same for me whether Left or Right - it's the principle - so I didn't renew a number of years ago now

Lawyers clearly have value to society. A person facing a serious criminal charge will need help and society expects crime to be effectively prosecuted. If someone believes that they have been harmed by the negligence of, say, a nurse, they will need help seeking compensation, whilst society expects NHS funds to be properly defended. Contracts for a house purchase or for a business deal need to be scrutinised and properly put together. The list is endless.

The danger in your approach is that is based upon an arbitrary and subjective assigning of 'value' ( another form of labelling).

There are cowboys in every walk of life, gm. I'm not sure that I can agree with your use of 'a lot', though.

As for the cost of legal services, lawyers carry a lot of overheads such as indemnity insurance (cocking up a multi million pound company merger or even a house purchase can have very expensive consequences) and meeting continuous training and development requirements. At the bottom of the scale, I know lawyers who undertake criminal legal aid work who earn very modestly - south of 30k p.a. whilst being available on 24 hour call out to the police station.

I have Professional indemnity insurance for the same reason it doesnt significantly add cost to anyones bill, I have CPD also doesnt add much to the bill.
