Agree Mick, if you post a good score the side batting second are always at a mental disadvantage and therefore, win the toss and bat. If the conditions are obviously advantageous to the bowler, then stick them in but all things being equal, bat. What is it that the old adage states? 'If you win the toss, nine times out of ten choose to bat. On the tenth occasion, think about and then bat'.

What a miserable lot. We get to our first semi final for 27 years. Do we praise Bairstow or Stokes or our bowlers? No all we do is whinge about our top scorer Root with over 500 runs at a SR of 91 comment on Buttlers ***uality and slag off Rashid. Unbelievable.

I reckon some of you would rather us lose just so you can join the queue on here to say 'I told you so'
    Unbelievable

It matters not a jot if he scores 100's of runs at Test Match pace, if he does it at less than a run a ball in limited overs games we will struggle or possibly lose, I reiterate crafty captains would keep him at one end all day giving him as much of the strike as is possible pressure the others to make it and look useless when getting out. I reiterate Root is an excellent cricketer, but preferably at Test Match level.

How can you possibly state Root is batting at Test Match pace? His Test SR is 55 and his WC SR is 91!

Got anything positive to say or shall I put you No1 in the queue!

You’re missing some of the valid point 923.

At 160 with the first wicket then falling on a flat track can you honestly tell me you want to see Root coming to the crease to nudge it around at 80-90 runs per hundred balls or less as in some instances this World Cup or would you concede that Buttler or Stokes would be better options to keep the pressure on?

I like thinking out of the box 923......I’d even consider sending in the likes of Plunkett at three after a great start to use as a “pinch hitter”.

My gripe with Root is that the tempo always drops ( on flat tracks ) when he comes into bat.

There’s no question about his quality and match nous as a test match player though.

923 if you can only revert to stats instead of realising that it was an exaggeration of comparisons I'll be your No 1. But I will say watch the Aussies or the Indians use him to slow the rate down in the final matches, it's a ploy that has been used since time began...ooops sorry that's another exaggeration....

You were 'exaggereating the facts' to make your point. That you consider that to be a good way of making your point I will take into account when reading any future posts.

I too thought promoting Plunkett up the order a good option. Sticking in a big hitting fast bowler to make a quick 20 or 30 seems to have gone out of fashion with all the teams.

As regards missing the point that is something you are all doing. This is not about Root or Buttler or any other individual player or tatic it's about negativity. Lose a game and lots of you are on here criticising all and sundry. Win a game (or 2) and it's criticise an individual (or 2)

I say again I reckon there are those of you who would get more pleasure out of seeing us lose than glory in us winning something/anything!

I think we should be a bit more varied in our batting line up. I do think Root is a brilliant #3 in the right circumstances. For instance, if we're chasing 250-300 at run-a-ball rate he is the perfect bloke to come in.

But if we're 150-160/1 after 25 overs on a flat track and looking to kick on, we should promote a Buttler or Morgan or maybe Stokes to #3.

I wouldn't keep it rigid, but be flexible. We've got the players to do it.

By the way, I agree with a lot of what 923 is saying. Its a real pleasure watching England now compared to 4-5 years ago...
