We pay £8m for Zohore who has an appalling goal scoring record.
We let Gayle go when securing his services for another season would cost less than £4m in wages etc.
Which would you rather have and which do you think is better value?

....... to sign a proven goal scorer. I wasn't at the game last night but from what I understand all we need is somebody to put the ball in the back of the net. I understand that it's difficult to replace the likes of Gayle and Rodrigues but we must 'push the boat out' to get a quality striker. If we can then you'd have to fancy our chances of going up.

8mill nothing nowadays al,just reading arsenal have shelled out 72 mill for some guy called Pepe,108 mil for griezman if that’s how you spell it.god knows how much Lukaku bale Zaha will go for.10,15,20 mill now seems you get run of the mill players.i thought like others that the premiership would eat itself but it’s getting more silly as the years go on.just saying .
We haven't paid anything like £8 million for Zohore to date. The only way we will is if he and we are a major success over the course of his contract. Don't mean to be picky but we didn't let Gayle go either. He returned to his contracted club who've been holding out for a fee reportedly in the region of £15 million to £20 million as they'd rather not loan him out again. I'd love to see him back and feel the fees we've committed to thus far have freed up wiggle room for increased wages elsewhere. Be it Gayle or someone else here's hoping we sign the goalscorer and wide man we clearly need.
I would pay the money for Gayle but I would think that the board has believed that Gayle is not good enough for the prem (which I doubt) so dont want to pay Newcastle their fee. If that's the case Its just further evidence that our club doesn't do risks. I think Gayle would be a great buy and cut it in the Prem. He didn't score many first season but I bet he would under Bilic.
Personally I’d go and make a decent bid for Roofe at Leeds. Now Sawyers is back he might fancy it you never know. If nothing else it might unsettle a top goal scorer at a major rival.
The stories are that we can't afford Gayle anyway, but are particularly not keen because he's 30 this season and the resale value wouldn't be much.
We signed Rondon at 25 and sold him 4 years later for £6m more than we bought him for. We also got a season of Gayle, purely because we had Rondon to bargain with.
I can see the board's point, it doesn't make sense for us to spend £15+ on a striker we're unlikely to sell on and get much cash back on.
My point 123, was that we need to strengthen in this area as we can't afford to lose two players of the quality of the two who have left us without adequate replacements. I'm not saying that we should pay 'top dollar' for Gayle but we are lightweight in this position and therefore need at least one proven goal scorer if we are to push for promotion.
But it's not about the Prem is it? It's about getting out of the Championship if Gayle proved once again what a good championship goal scorer he is then if they still believe he is not good good enough for the Prem it would be easy to recoup whatever we paid for him.
