Lascelles: Our shining Captain Fantastic or just another average defender?

He came in with Darlow where I had little, if any, expectations regarding the pair of them.

Started to look like someone who cared and could bring people together in the relegation season.

In Rafa's first two full seasons he really looked like a natural leader, a big presence and even a probable prospect for the England team (= a big sale to a 'bigger' club).

Now, I'm not so sure about his abilities. Whatever happens, I doubt he will make the step up to the Top 6/7. I don't think he would get in, say, Leicester's team at the moment.

Both Lejeune and Schär seem to be if not streets ahead than simply better than him, at least right now.

I still like the idea of him; he's relatively young, British and has the potential to be a good leader. I'm just not sure about his ability at the moment.

What do you lot make of him, and do you think there's a better candidate for the Captain's armband in the squad at the moment?

Some of the criticism he gets is unwarranted.

He is steady and unspectacular. He us more than decent and he does care.

    He is an honest pro...

The problems at the club are not Lascelles or Joelinton or even Atsu or Almiron.

The problem is the owner, his specky little sidekick and Mrs Doubtfire pulling the strings...

The players are as innocent as us, not being good enough is their only crime.

Enthusiastic and hard working but our worst CB in my opinion.

100% agree Fernandez is better than him and Lejeune is streets ahead of him. I don’t know how he gets a game every week, his positional play is rubbish. The first Leicester goal he ran away from the attacking player and followed Vardy who was offside.

I always think it undermines a side if the captain is changed without the ex-captain having left the club.
I like Lascelles although I think he has failed to fulfil our expectations from two years ago or so.

It doesn't help, of course, when Lejeune and Schar have come in and been fantastic signings, which undermines Lascelles a bit more, but he'll be aware of that.

Schar is our best player by a distance, but that's not to say he would be the best in the armband.

Bang average CB even Clark looks a better defender then him, Just because he is captain shouldnt mean he starts every game whatever form he shows. Schar Fernandez and Lejeune should all be picked ahead of him.

Just ordinary imo and not as good as he thinks he is ,I wouldn't miss him one bit if he fled off

Good honest lad who genuinely cares.

He's seen Schar & Lejuene come in and play Futbol as well as defend solidy. He's seen that and thought I can play some futbol too but sadly not, that is when he has had his worst games, trying to play with the ball at his feet and do a Schar. He should stick to what he's good at and not take silly risks becuase he can't dribble or pass for sheeeit.

He remains our captain for me but i agree he should fight for his place. Wasn't there a time Rafa benched him?

Lots of good points, particularly in relation to how he hasn't kicked on from where he was to where we thought he could get to.

At the moment, Schar, Lejeune and, for me, Fernandez would be ahead of him but I'd place him above Clark, tbh.

He absolutely did NOT help himself coming out and backing fatso, though. You can say it has nothing to do with how he performs on the pitch but it does colour people's opinions of him.
