At least fifty million people died in the flu pandemic of 1919. (Actual estimates are closer to one hundred million.) Little was known about containment in those days and we would be foolish to go back to how things were handled a hundred years ago.
I was living in Asia during the SARS outbreak in 2002 and part of the team in my company trying to help with containment. That was no fun and very scary.
I applaud all efforts to restrict and control that are going on in China.
I was more concerned over the Ebola virus.

We are overdue a pandemic and this may or may not be the one. Pandemics are nature combing its hair, strengthening the gene pool by killing off the weakest. If it gets over here in a big way it could see of 10% of the population. Still unlikely but certainly not overkill.
The authorities in China (and here) aren’t particularly bothered how many it kills, what concerns them is the strain and cost the walking wounded will have on medical facilities and how it will effect the general economy and GDP.
