Football is tribal. There are a few places on various outskirts of the town that have mostly Sheffield or Barnsley strongholds. Namely Wath, bordering with Barnsley. I've always felt we could have been a much bigger club had we gained more support from the Swinton/Wath/Mexborough areas, but people don't tend to switch allegiances so the process of indoctrination is a long and mostly unsuccessful one. Even success on the pitch ie Championship football only gains us about 300 extra fans than when we're in L1.
Rotherham has never dared to dream big. Maybe if Millmoor had been built as a bigger ground from the outset, say a 35000+ capacity instead of 25000, we could have got those bigger crowds in the 1950s and progressed more as a club, leaving a longer lasting legacy of support from areas that now don't really associate with RUFC.
Tony Stewart had ambitions to reach the Premier league but built a 12000 stadium. History repeating itself.
Im not complaining BTW. I love RUFC as we are.
