I'm not sure the intention of this advice is that everyone will heed it. If it was, it would be a compulsory lock down. They are trying to flatten the peak of the virus, and by 'advising' I believe they've calculated that enough people will listen to stop the thing peaking, but not so many that it brings the numbers crashing down only for them to reignite with a vengeance later once restrictions are lifted.

Yep very possibly lasterman. There will certainly be plenty of irresponsible folk to factor in. To assume everyone will toe the line at this stage would be bit naive. There is also the herd immunity argument where it could be a good thing if a lot of non vulnerable people get it and shield the more vulnerable. Old folk need protecting most but I am not sure you can put them under house arrest for 4 months unless they are pretty knacked anyway. There are a lot of fit old folk out there who will be ok if they follow sensible precautions. I suppose if things get out of hand you would have to enforce compliance by law.

Take up golf Roly and play a round with gm_gm to iron out your political differences. As bars, restaurants, gyms, nail and hair salons, cinemas...etc. here are all ordered to close and all major events are on hold, golf courses have been spared the rod and are still allowed to be open. Fore!

I suspect that the non-closure of schools and colleges is a deliberate attempt to manage the path of the virus through non-vulnerable individuals. Nobody in authority is saying this and I don't know - just my interpretation of what might be happening.

Yep agreed. I dont suppose the govt could say we are gonna deliberately let young folk get it.

    Figuratively?
    Why not state facts?
House arrest was scaremongering at the least.
    Why would you say that?
