There has never been a plan or intention to allow the disease to spread unchecked.

It was always the case that the government intended to apply more measures to put the brakes on the rate of spread as and when needed.

Imperial College has been providing the modelling for the government from the very start of the crisis.

I know that people get hysterical about the notion of herd immunity, but the reality is that it is the only realistic way that the crisis will end. It's herd immunity that prevents seasonal flu killing many millions each winter. It's great that work on vaccines is advancing, but it would be unwise to assume that effective ones can be created, tested and produced in sufficient quantities in time to address the pandemic.
As I understand it from a medical expert on radio 4 the other evening the herd immunity policy takes well over 12 months to take great affect .

That was his view at least .

The problem as I see it is that solutions have legs but those who are providing them aren't mentioning the many months this will take quite so much .

I thought Johnson's 12 weeks statement the other night was particularly ill advised although I understand he needs to remain positive and keep moral up .

Dammed if he does dammed if he doesn't .

His hero Churchill told the nation he'd nothing to offer other than blood , toil , sweat and tears which equally many people wouldn't like .

It's an incredibly difficult postion for the PM .

A SKY news report this morning from Lombardy in Italy was frightening to view and extremely upsetting .

    Some extremely distressing scenes .

I was keeping my distance in the shop queue this morning and someone jumped in front of me, some real idiots around who've obviously not bothered watching the news.

Has i mentioned my son a NHS worker self isolating, had to go into his work at Northern General Hospital yesterday, for to be tested for the corona virus, then he had to go home, now waiting for the results coming through.
He telephoned me this morning, saying a NHS vehicle pulled up outside his home yesterday afternoon, he thought what are they doing here, it turned out they were delivering his new uniform.

Agree some very distressing scenes. It mentioned from all the people to have gone into intensive care only one is/has recovered. All the rest have died. Sad sad times and we're still on a upwards curve.

Meanwhile South Yorkshire Police appear to have ramped up their speed camera vans tactics. Neighbour saw 2 vans within 3 miles of each other on his travels yesterday and another friend was recently done for 36mph on the notorious Oughtibridge road which changes from 50mph to 30mph within yards. In this time of crisis surely these officers could be better employed. This lunchtime i passed a gathering of at least 30 ****agers on the precinct outside a local supermarket. Message not getting through there then ! Parents have a lot of responsibility at this time.

The message from the doctor they interviewed was direct and contained a real warning that we will see the situation in Lombardy soon enough here .

    Isolate and isolate now .

Certainly anyone who hasn't seen the report on SKY NEWS and perhaps think they are indestructible would do well to watch it .

We had an open meeting on the shop floor yesterday afternoon with a manager who runs the railway side of the business .

He was like a kid on xmas day , his eyes were like saucers .

    Great news he said .

Network Rail are pulling forward their maintenance programme to take advantage of the service restrictions .

Tremendous amount of business for us and we have to be ready to respond to this challenge .

It was at this point I walked away and went back to my department with 50 pair of eyes looking my way , at one time I'd have offered him my thoughts but at my time of life I find it best to avoid direct confrontation and go down another route .

I found his attitude highly inappropriate and totally out of tune with the seriousness of the situation we are facing right now .

I'm at a loss to as to why he thinks our supply chain will be unaffected , our staff remain healthy and Network Rail have enough workers to carry out the work .
