A Ken Barlow of champions of terrace housing. One minute he's learning to grade spuds, then a spell at university changes everything.
Behold mortals, the messiah has returned

Stalin, born to a poor family in Gori, joined the Russian social democratic Labour party
Hitler born in Austria before moving to Germany in 1913. fought as a private in the great war. then joined the German workers party in 1919.

Nope, no sign of communism there. But the fundamental connection was SOCIALISM.
If you read it all again, it connects all the factions of political leanings of the left.
Where as socialism sounds like a utopia of wonder for the lower classes. It has never been workable on its own.
It goes either one way or the other.
To a communist or capitalist leaning.

Now back to the Guardian you two,. The thinking, intellectual mans left wing rag is doing a great piece by Owen Jones, on how COVID 19 is targetting gays deliberately.
If you’re going to have a go at me, Tricky at least respond to my reply (post#83) rather than Swale’s observation, via a series of curious facts that somehow link Ken Barlow to Owen Jones via Stalin and Hitler.

I honestly haven’t a clue who’s been ‘grading spuds’, who the ‘Messiah’ is meant to be or what Hitler moving from Austria to Germany before becoming Private Adolf has got to do with any of this, so I’ll just await further clarification.

P.S. Just seen your other post.
Corbyn and Abbott are soon going to be on the periphery of UK politics and are entirely irrelevant to this debate.
My views are my own and I don’t feel the need to follow what you consider the public consensus.
You’ve quoted a Daily Telegraph poll...remind me who Johnson used to write for.

Fair point Tricky...but you need to read the ‘small print’. A synonym is defined as ‘a word or phrase that means exactly OR nearly the same as another word or phrase’.

In post #68 you implied that communism, socialism, collectivism, Marxism and Leninism were all the same. They’re not and though you have repeatedly referred elsewhere to Corbyn as being a ‘Communist’...he’s not either.

Sure there are lots of similarities and if you were to draw a Venn diagram - not really my strongpoint - there’d be lots of overlaps just as there would - as Swale has already suggested - if you included fascism in the list.

My point is that it is a classic oversimplification on your part to try and make out that the five ‘isms’ you identified are the same, just as it would be to suggest that capitalism and socialism are incompatible when there are at least four forms of capitalism - GP can probably list more - displaying varying degrees of social responsibility.
In essense, there is not much to answer because you already did.

I quoted direct from the Collins dictionary as I knew someone would dive in head first.
Of course communism, socialism, collectivism, Marxism and Leninism are not the same. But they overlap in many ways and always start at the softer end of the scale. Even the hardest communist countries started with the socialist people power and equality slogan.
Now my point was, if the dictionary has lumped then together. Then they must ultimately be very difficult to seperate into definite classes.

As for Corbyn and you claim he isn't a communist? Think about his preachings, beliefs, desires, friends and allies.

From the same source as before.

Communism is the political belief that all people are equal and that workers should control the means of producing things.
...the ultimate triumph of communism in the world.
Synonyms: socialism, Marxism, Stalinism, collectivism More Synonyms of communism

Now seeing as comrade Corbyn cannot come out as a communist, he's playing the peoples socialist friend.
He's never done himself any favours with his anti British rants/terrorist friends/ hatred of the armed forces/anti Jewish feelings etc.
Ultimately, the population never bought it. Worst leader since 1923 FACT!!!!

Presumably these "folks" you talk about are of a similar bent to you? I.E avoid responding to the facts by either not giving an answer or responding with paragraphs of gibberish which you gleaned from google.

You see thats another problem you have, as well as having a decidedly myopic one sided view of life, your completely unable to absorb or understand any information that doesn't accord to your rather quaint view of the world, have a massive chip on your shoulder because you lack the intelligence to analyse and understand complex concepts, view anyone with the intellectual ability greater than a gnat with suspicion and have this charming belief that life is black and white.

PS You should know that whilst the internet is fine source of information, not all that information is true, not even when it confirms your own prejudices.

PPS Every time you post you do just demonstrate your complete lack of understanding of how the world works! Its rather funny and definitely very entertaining.

In effect, two thirds of the public are very happy with how he's handled it.
I've been surprised at how many folk who declare dislike/hatred of The Conservative Party and who would still never vote for them have chosen to praise BJ (and, even more so, Rishi Sunak your next prime minister). I've witnessed a significant amount of sorting the men from the bigots on social media, one friend of mine utterly despondent that his remainer friends actually have their own minds and don't in any way share his anti-BJ feelings. IMO BJ's big mistake (which I THINK he and we will get away with) was to go along with the early 'herd immunity' scientific aadvice. A death rate of 4% of 80% of 60million = 2 million souls would have led to revolution, thank God the thinking changed

So, you're saying he's either a politician, a Tory or both?

Well thats one way of doing the maths, though again there are some obvious flaws in your reasoning.

The death rate is nothing like 4% and never was going to be. For a start not everyone is being tested, so in truth we don't know the number of cases.

In Germany where they are doing extensive testing its 0.06%, the Uk is only testing serious cases.

Aagin I go back to the fact that there are on average 56,000 excess winter deaths in the UK, these haven't been factored into the modelling on coronavirus deaths and its been admitted there will be substantial overlap.

The issue is not so much the number of deaths, as most of those people would have died within the short term, i.e. within one year anyway. The issue is the overwhelming of the health service by the number of acute cases in a short space of time.

there is an argument which says that if those most at risk had been effectively isolated and extensive testing applied as in germany so that cases could be tracked then the lockdown wouldnt be required.

Nobody is calculating exactly what the cost and loss of life will be as a result of the lock down - despite the governments financial package, many thousands of businesses will go under resulting in huge job losses and a possible global recession the impact of which will be significant.

Quite how long the younger element of the population will appreciate the sacrifice they are making to keep the older echelon alive is going to be interesting.

Its easy to be sanguine about economic paralysis when it doesn't affect you personally.

On a brighter note apparently 50% of acute cases who get intensive care are surviving at the moment.
