My Gran’s brother was in bomb disposal and was evacuated from Dunkirk. Grandad fought with Monty in Africa and in Greece where he was awarded an MBE.
She (Geordie lass born in Jesmond and lived in Gosforth for almost all her life) was in Torquay at the time and told me how she used to watch the Spitfires dog fighting over the Channel with the ‘hun’!
She passed away a couple of years back at he age of 101!

I think the stress and terror of those times is lost in all but the most recent war films.They were all heroes - each and every one.
