I wonder which political party has been responsible for the erection of most of the statues in London say

They tend to be in to all that , it's their culture , this honour that honour .

Seems they have to have it rubber stamped just to convince themselves they actually did any good .

Worth a look at the history of the Tory Party and South African Apartheid Exile if you get a chance .

Actually bad enough for Cameron to apologise for it .

Just look at the amount of money that was paid out in compensation to owners of slaves when it was abolished in 1833 .

Cameron's ancestors amongst them , maybe that's why he apologised ?

Is that more your point.... ? Is that what’s really bothering you Exile? Not that they shouldn’t be there.... Just an opportunity to blame a particular party? The point is they are up. And the actual debate should be wether they should be up.... Wondered how long it would be before it became a Party Political blame thread..

If we are to factor in the times of the day as you have alluded to yourself , things we thought were funny such as " Love Thy Neigbour " in the 70's , Jim Davidson and Bernard Manning and the imperialists who sold slaves too .

You also have to balance that up that certain posters on here have strong views towards the Tory Party .

Myself , SB and Exile share those views , they aren't formed for nothing , it doesn't work that way contrary to popular belief .

It isn't cheap shot vitriol , it's life experience .

Not everyone is blessed to have a neutral mind and brought up or lived and worked in an area both logistically and industrial that was relatively untouched no matter which party held power .

I know your neck of the woods very well and I know I couldn't afford a house over that way without downsizing significantly , there aren't no Tipsy Cows this side of High Hoyland and Wombwell doesn't have the niche shopping experience Denby Dale enjoys .

There's more money on the industrial site where I work than was ever earned when it stood as Park Mill Pit and that's a fact .

It's not a pop at you , where you live or anything else and your a Tyke as much if not more than most of us .

Just saying that certain views regarding a certain party are held for a significant reason and not necessarily tribalism has some would have you believe .

It's quite possible that some good will come out of all this ? People may start thinking differently about things ? Times have to change , peaceful protests instead of violence ? I only hope this " gentle giant " isn't held up as some kind of Martyr/ the man who changes the world ? He was wrongfully murdered yes , but he had history allegedly ,
As for turning things political , well that needs toning down too , on here we have a few who dip , in now and again to air there left wing views , some are humour , some are nasty , it's not a oneway street , accept others opinions matter or better still just ignore ,

The measured response is appreciated, I do very much understand Animal. I actually live within two mile of Huddersfield Town centre, albeit close to fields. I live in a village with one of the oldest cricket fields in the country, and it’s quite nice. Very close to MoIdgreen and Dalton (not affluent areas ). I don’t live in a grand detached house, It’s a terrace. I MAY not even own it, and I do take your point as regards the fact that housing over here is significantly more expensive. My uncle worked at Park Mill, until he retired. My mother born in Wombwell. my father an electrician and great grandfather a lay preacher who baptised folk actually down the mine in Elsecar. I do understand why the thoughts of yourself exile and SB have a deep hatred of the Tories, I really do. And I DONT in any way think you shouldn’t have them. Or state them online.

The issue shouldn’t be about who put them up, or why....but if they should remain, and how deep the tenuous links should be before taking them down. Captain Cook? Lord Nelson? Harold Wilson is the next target for Kirklees Council.


My point in the post replying to exile was that the issue here is BAME, not Blame.

You can't make a judgement without that knowledge

I was actually. Knew about him from reading about Bristol, it’s a place we’ve been a few good times, not just for footy. I like History. I wasn’t deep into this issue, . However, even though I know about it, I’m uncomfortable with the way it was brought down. Uncomfortable with the snowball of Snowflake opinion taking over this country and I’m uncomfortable with the depth of scrutiny that some of our statues and paintings are getting. Victoria’s statue in Huddersfield is under scrutiny, and she came to power after the abolition of slavery. Captain Cook is another.

I DO get that the statues of Certain people offend. I DO.

I want this to be a careful scrutiny, not an excuse to remove all symbols of our past. We all have stuff in our past we aren’t proud of.
Some we remember with a giggle, some we remember with shame.
The idea of putting certain statues in museums, where that shame can be felt is a good one....... Some iconic statues of Capt Cook, and Nelson should remain, as you say...... Not many folk outside Bristol would have known that statue existed.
