Councils are also starting the process of inviting comments on what public statues and memorials should be removed.

    Ridiculous.

So what happens when the public decides it wants a statue to stay and the 'activists' want it go.

If there had been a public vote on whether the demos should have gone ahead, I think it would have been no. Would that have stopped them.

    Where will this all end?

As an example, the knives are out for Baden-Powell because some sources identify him as a Nazi sympathiser. Yet this may be down to nothing more than his adoption of the swastika as a symbol in the 1920's. He lived for many years in India where the swastika is a symbol of good luck.
I think you might have to do a bit more research on Baden-Powell Sid.

I think statues are all a bit naff, but if we must have them, probably not one of someone who thought Mein Kampf was a ‘wonderful book’.

Would it be a good idea to turn the sites of Nazi concentration camps into beautifully lawned public parks so we can forget what horrible places they were? Or is it better to hang on them as a permanent reminder?
Rather than throwing statues into the docks after mob invasion, why not re-erect the statue in museum or put a public disclaimer on the base of the statue, pointing out that here is a man who did so much for Bristol but by foul means?
Now the attention is on Queen Victoria here and Confederate generals in the US.
But these people are undeniably a part of history and cannot be denied a place in it. We learn from the bad things we have done in our own lives just as we learn from the bad deeds of people in history.
It is a mindless act to simply destroy artefacts from yesterday on the spur of the moment
I was just about to put on something similar Sid, great post.
Do we pull down the Coliseum in Rome or The Tower of London and you can imagine the uproar if a number of people want the statue of Nelson Mandella removed? Very dangerous ground we are heading to.

... yes, cultural revolution in every way but name.
From the horses mouth - if you'll forgive - inside the BBC, if you're 'left leaning' politically, black/non white, gay, you stand an excellent chance of being offered a job against a 'standard's white applicant with same qualifications. I know this because someone I know (black as the ace of spades) tried it out ...didn't want the job/went for another offer at another company.
Boris and Dom need to clean THAT swamp - no one else will ...

If you have the box sets, hide them. I'm putting all my *** Pistols and Clash albums in safe storage before the brown shirts arrive.
