It is important to get the appointment right, of course it is. But to wait 10 days then admit we haven't even spoken to one of the outstanding candidates?
And also, so what if certain candidates have games? They have games for the next three weeks. Are we gonna wait until then to speak to them?
Still in games could also mean McKinlay.
Couple of things on McClaren for all the doubters on here. First he is a very principled honest guy and he would never use United to get publicity or raise his profile. When asked by TA and having agreed to look at the chance to manage United he would be considering several things. The status - Prem or Championship, and the current mess in the courts with the attendant risk in that. Second he would have known the salary maximum and bonuses and that would have been established before he agreed to meet TA so I don't think that would be a reason to turn it down. Next, the players and transfer budgets. He is a dedicated guy and would not want to come to United to finish 6th next season, he would want to challenge the 2 Glasgow clubs and if he felt the budgets would prevent a decent chance of success that would be one major reason for turning the opportunity down. Last, I know from personal experience that it can be difficult getting family (wives) to relocate. I once asked my own Mrs whether she was happy to relocate and she was all positive, yes, definitely, no problem.. 3 weeks later I was offered a new job in the Northeast and she wouldn't move from the Midlands.
So give the guy the benefit of the doubt please.
We have been given the gift of time. The season kicks off in 30 days. The Court case could be over by the weekend and we'll know for sure if we are rightfully keeping our promotion. This could influence a lot of things in terms of players and managers coming to the club.
I'd much rather we took the time to consider all of the possibilities in front of us instead of a knee-jerk decision. Interesting that he said he's spoken to people not mentioned in the media, maybe Tony isnt leaking info after all! I still think Nigel Clough is worth a phone call if I'm honest. Maybe thats because I stuck a tenner on him at 33/1 mind you.
Remember, it’s important that the new manager is not considered to be a “runner up” appointment, so Utd need to keep all options open, make sure they interview who they need to, and only offer the job to someone that accepts it, and not let speculation suggest anyone has turned it down. So far, McClaren has met, but indicated he was not ready, nowhere does it say, he was actually offered the position, so making sure speculation doesn’t put off others, again, is really important.
Which tbf to him, is what Asghar has attempted with this statement. Think it's fair to assume McClaren was his preferred choice however. If Wright was, then he's gone about it in a funny way. He's without a club, therefore available, free & easy to speak to. You don't take 10+ days to interview your top candidate.
So if we can't get your first choice (not a bad suggestion imo) you want 3 ex players who between them have never managed ONE club? And nothing personal here but what is this obsession that some fans seem to have wanting Dillon back at our club? Maybe add Flood to that list!
We need a manager who has managed at least one club in his own right, who has achieved something of note with the club he's managed (Holt does qualify in what he achieved at Livi) but this is no time for a band of rookies.
