This is a news story from 2001 that made national headlines. Can you honestly say the town was as outraged at this as it should have been? Where were all the protests in the streets then when none of the men were prosecuted?
You say you had no idea what was going on - but clearly we had warnings, just the prevailing view at the time wasn't to view the children as victims but as participants. Everyone who carried on with their lives as if nothing happened after that story is guilty to some extent of doing that. That was the time to protest.
I'm the same age as Sammy Woodhouse. I went to Clifton. I definitely remember the pejorative term "p*ki sh*gger" having use. I was naive and unaware to the implications of what it meant, but I got the jist. I almost certainly had school mates who were victims. If this expression was in such widespread use, the local parents and teachers would have been aware. The problem is these were usually kids that were troubled, and they were not seen as victims at all. It wasn't until the 2010s that finally changed.
Interesting that even our Home Secretary suggests that a blind eye was turned to Leicester sweatshops due to "cultural sensitivity." I listened to BBC reports over several days and not once was ethnicity mentioned. I have no personal experience of Leicester but have inspected premises in some northern towns. In each case access was difficult and only obtained after much effort and wrangling. The premises were in the rag trade, invariably located in old mills, the usual scenario was a couple of blokes at a large (locked) steel door. Inside were dozens of women (few seemed to understand English) in cramped conditions each at a table with a sewing machine. No action was ever taken on our reports. So far as I know these places are operating just the same and are a perfect environment for Covid-19.
John, if people saw the article then my guess is they were happy that these 5 people would be taken off the streets and punished thinking that they were just a few exceptions of criminals compared with the general population. Like if a child killer is caught you wouldn’t expect there to be a whole gang of them behind the scene. Turns out in the cases in Rotherham and other towns there were a few more compared to the general population doesn’t it?
Anyway, none of the victims ever came to me to tell me that they had been abused. What they did do though is tell the police and social services and what did the police and social services do? Nothing.
