    Cricket Umpires

I don't follow it closely any more, I just check the scores occasionally, and looking at the scorecard this morning I noticed that the two umpires in this Test are called Gough and Illingworth. I've no idea, I'm out of touch with the game, are they the cricketing Goughs and Illingworths, this surely can't be co-incidence ?

Michael Gough is Hartlepool lad who showed promise as a player in his late ****s and played for Durham 2nd XI but he never progressed enough and gave up playing to start umpiring when he was just 26 years old in 2006.
Richard Illingworth was a spin bowler for Worcester for 18 years and he took up umpiring in 2006 at the age of 42

Cheers Sub, another two questions then, is Michael any relation to Darren, and is Richard any relation to Raymond. I'm sure Raymond had a son who played county cricket, if not for England, is this him ?

Neither is related, however, there was a myth that went around for years saying that Richard was Raymond's son, however, this is not the case even though Richard was born in Bradford and Raymoond hailed from Pudsey!
Ray's son-in-law is Ashley Metcalfe who did play for Yorkshire.

Well, well, I never knew that Sub, always thought it was his lad. Maybe he was, but Ray wasn't owning up to it, "Nay lass, allus down't pub with me mates on a Friday night me, never been to Bradfud in me life".

They're buggers them Yorkies, in-bred a lot of them as well.

Aye, that's probably how the rumour started, however, Richard was born in August 1963 and, assuming that his mother went full term. Raymond was touring Australia from October 1962 and they used to go by ship in those days!
