Tbh, Andy it’s not about what I’d have ‘accepted’...it’s just a debate and I’ve offered my opinion.
Have a look at the replacement headstone...all that is missing is the dog’s name. The story remains and I think what they’ve done is appropriate. Storm in a teacup really.
I think I’m right in saying that the name was changed to ‘Trigger’ in the film for US audiences years ago, so this is hardly unprecedented.
If I was a black visitor to the site and found that a war hero had a dog called ‘N****r’ I suspect it might not endear him to me.

The question is...was it right or wrong/helpful or unhelpful/well intentioned or PC overkill, to remove the controversially insulting name ‘N****r’ from the grave of a dog belonging to a war hero. Simple as that.

In the light of the facts that we now live in an infinitely more multicultural and cosmopolitan society than was the case back then and that it was done very respectfully, I believe that it was the right thing to do and I’ve said why.

I am clearly in a minority which worries me not one jot. Some, both on here and amongst the ‘petitioners’ will have objected to perceived ‘political correctness’, others will have simply taken a more traditional/historical view and some will be motivated by malicious and racist intent. Where you fit in that particular ‘spectrum’...well that’s for you to say.
Minority or not. You have an opinion. For me it is wrong, but that's my choice.
As OTR pointed out, it wasn't just the dogs name, it was the code word for the breech of Mohne dam. That's re arranging history for me.
FYI. I remember reading of the exploits of a dog in Normandy of the same name, who was brilliant at finding hidden explosives, saving many lives.
Lets wipe that as well then.

    Hooooray, exactly.
Don't wipe it, amend it and educate.

Hmmm...’amend’...definition...’change to make fairer or more accurate or reflect changing circumstances.’

Isn’t that exactly what they’ve done?

    No, they've erased history

Imagine discussing the horrors of WW2 without being able to use the word Nazi?

Not really a fair comparison, Andy. I might, because of my beliefs, be insulted if someone called me a Nazi...or even a Tory. Might be a bit bemused if someone called me a Commie...but they are all acknowledged political abbreviations which refer to one’s political beliefs.
‘N****r’ is, and always has been, nothing other than a term of contempt and a slur based on a person’s skin colour.

Thanks. Did you know that the term ‘snowflake’ was first used in Missouri in the mid C19th to describe those opposed to the abolition of the slave trade?
    Now that really is ironic.

Well you’re easily offended and totally transparent, Tricky...though I suspect you’ve seldom been referred to as ‘liberal’.
