I seem to remember that Greaves was fit for the semi final v Portugal but Alfred stuck with the Hurst and Peters connection due to their club link.

    I stand corrected.

Southgates squad for the current internationals

    Tammy Abraham 23 - 4 caps

    Trent Alexander-Arnold 22 - 12 caps

    Harvey Barnes 22 - 1 cap

    Dominic Calvert-Lewin 23 - 2 caps

    Ben Chilwell 22 - 11 caps

    Joe Gomez 23 - 11 caps

    Ainsley Maitland-Niles 23 - 2 caps

    Mason Mount 21 - 9 caps

    Marcus Rashford 22 - 39 caps

    Declan Rice 21 - 10 caps

    Bukayo Saka 19 - 1 cap

    Jadon Sancho 20 - 14 caps

    Harry Winks 24 - 7 caps

    Reece James 20 - 2 Caps

Add to that Phil Foden 20 - 1 cap and Mason Greenwood 19 - 1 cap

I would say that that represents possibly the most youthful squad ever announced by an England manager.

Remind everyone again that the reason that Grealish doesn't get selected is because he is only 25 and that Southgate doesn't select youth because he 'plays it safe'.

You might want to add to that lot, Dean Henderson, as he's only 23 and of late Jordan Pickford 26 is becoming somewhat calamitous in goal of late.

..and possibly due to him taking revenge for Greaves inferring he was a 'gyppo' due to his poor upbringing?

    Wouldn’t have helped

Another factor could have been Greaves’ lack of enthusiasm in training and his lower physicality than Hurst. Games up to the semi finals had been a bit “robust” so maybe Alf considered Hurst to be a better choice than Greaves

Also in the semi final England were playing Portugal and Alf knew that they would have to keep Eusebio quiet which meant Charlton would play deeper thus resorting to more of a long ball game, again Hurst was better suited for that style.

Fantastic research. Especially Greaves lower level of physicality. Where did you copy that from?
