Thread: Speeding on the M5

    Speeding on the M5

Just got notification of a speeding fine for doing 72mph in a 60mph on the M5 North between J17 & J16 just south of M4 interchange. It was a variable speed camera. I'd got no idea there was 60 mph on any bits of Mway. So I looked it up and it's the 3rd most prolific camera in the UK. The 7 most prolific are all in Avon and Somerset on the M4/M5/M32 around Bristol. Not somewhere I often visit but thought it worth a heads up to some of you who probably do.

I am convinced that the variable speed limits on those so-called smart motorways are used to raise revenue. There were plenty of times coming to the Hawthorns on the M6 where the limits were set at 60mph (for no apparent reason) then one of them is 40mph, again no apparent reason, and usually the next sign sets it back to the national limit of 70mph. The only conclusion one can come to is that it purely to generate fines.

Did not the big red circles with 60 in the middle give you a clue ?

Can I have the last laugh *?
The 'keeper' of the car has to be notified within 14 days of the offence. It was sent first to the lease co. and didn't get posted to me until 19 days later.
I'll donate the £100 to charity and the 3 points to the Albion.*
Just to say again the 8 most prolific speed cameras in the UK are all on Smart Mways around Bristol catching someone about every 5 minutes.

Just be careful not to ‘count your chickens......’. The law is strange in this respect, if the police can show that they made best efforts to contact the registered keeper within the 14 days, then that can be enough for the prose to proceed.

If it was recieved by the lease company within the 14 days it's deemed as served to the Registered keeper. They then have to reply to a notice requesting who would be driving at that particular time
