Between the seasons 77-76 and 92-93 United never finished lower than 5th.
Add to that the many glorious European nights, we were spoiled beyond belief.
Correction for you mate. In 86-87 They made the scot cup final. Losing to the buddies. It was played just before the uefa final and players were tired etc.

It was a pleasure watching United in Europe. In those days everyone cheered for each other in Europe and United were for several years the most exciting team in Britain to watch. Especially in 87 when the whole island was watching! McLean was a master. Fiercely loyal, and demanded the same from his plauers. Even as the mighty Rangers moved to get him, he shocked scottish football, showing loyalty to his club. He was very persuasive and often got his way. I often wonder if we had got our first choice, if we could have conquered Europe. Credit to him for making his club known nationwide under the label of “new firm”. It shows what an achievement this is when it still is the case many years after he left United aswell as retaining the position as one of the top 5 or 6 best supported clubs in the country.
Genuinely thats a lovely post. Thanks for taking the time to post that.

You are indeed correct. Apologies for the typo.

I was at that game, crap weather, crap game, yet another cup final goal chopped off and extra time.

There is no doubt it really impacted both physically and mentally on the players going into that final on what had already been a long draining season.

Agree but after all he did play for Dundee. Fair play though the general reaction to Jim's passing has been a credit to most clubs perhaps not Aberdeen though. Had a wee look at the Dark Blues site ( their Mad site seems amost abandoned these days) and almost without exception their reaction is a credit to them.
    RIP Jim McLean.

Both Wee Jum and his players were so much better than that list! That list is pretty phenomenal but Jim and the players deserved many more of them Semi and finals to read ‘winners’

We should really have had double digit winners medals in the 80s alone!

Edited to say this isn’t a criticism of Jim or anyone else just a sad observation
I would agree with that. Some of those cup final defeats though were we didn't sometimes get the breaks. 87 cup final although we never looked like losing and Ferguson's goal would stand nowadays Gallagher lying in the back of net ??? 88 cup final we were comfortable and always remember Bannon with a header that he headed into ground and bouncing over the bar from 6 yards which would have made it 2-0. 91 final again could have went either way.
Although it was still all made possible in the first place by Wee Jum.
