Definitely been a little bit cooler up here recently. I have had to ditch the flip flops and shorts for my walk in the woods since Thursday. It was a good job that I could find my trainers and tracksuit bottoms otherwise I would have had to stay at home.

If the weather forecast is correct I should be able to get back to normal wear next week.

The last time I visited Russia was in May 1998. I was at an EXPO in Moscow and it was bloody freezing even then.

A few years ago we were on a cruise on one of those Clipper sailing ships, we were invited to the Captain's table for dinner one night and he was telling us about his sailing career. Years ago apparently, he was captain on a foreign ship that called in at Newcastle, the owners went bankrupt, the ship was impounded and he had to spend the winter marooned in Newcastle. 'Oh dear,' I said, (I couldn't swear), 'that's a cold shop in winter'. 'Not really', he said, 'where I come from in Ukraine, it can get down to -20Âșc in winter, I loved the Newcastle winter.'
