It's not all borders it's Austria and Czech.

I've been all over the place this last year swinging between we have to keep the economy going and keeping safe. I now think we should shut everything down we can for as long as it takes.

We did not shut our borders but it was made very difficult to travel insomuch that you had to self isolate form14 days upon returning.

We were Corona virus free, (only cases we had we those that were caught in the testing of those returning) so number remained low.

Sadly that all changed when they allowed university students to return in great numbers for Christmas and also they allowed some builders were allowed to travel inbound and work ( with restrictions). Unfortunately mid January we went from 1 or 2 cases to nearly 400. A matter of a couple of weeks, hence back into our second lockdown. We have had a further death also.

I do not believe in coincidences so I am sure either a student or necessary building worked is responsible as community seeding went mad. Figures are reducing again but it just shows that there is only one way to deal with this blasted evil and that is to stop travel (other than essential travel but with restrictions) and I’d you get a spike lockdown.

Jersey ignored going into lockdown and have paid a heavy price, we on the other hand will start to emerge in another few days. Slowly I hope but I fear our new government will not be as patient as the last one and they seem hell bent on doing it quicker for all the wrong reasons i.e. political gain.

I am situated in the Jewel of the Channel Islands, Guernsey.

Albeit we are a small island of 62 to 64,000 inhabitants it could be scaled up. The thing I was trying to emphasise is that it only takes loosening of restrictions to quickly, particularly to accommodate a minority, to take you back to the beginning. As I have said we were COVID free from May last year and came out of lock, from memory, at the end of May beginning of June, so have had total freedom, with masks and everything being open, but easing restrictions at Christmas appears to have let the blasted thing back in.

This pandemic is far from over.
I've been informed that Europe in the next 6-8 weeks will be showing a similar exponential rise that we had pre xmas unless they increase restrictions.

France decided to ignore the advice from their own CDC the other day and decided that a public holiday will go ahead as normal. They were told that the Kent varient was seeded in the community but chose not to act.

Just read your post relating to Guernsey bmg buddy. Thought I would relate a story about my visit there !

In my working life (I retired 12 years ago) I used to visit a customer in Jersey once a year. Always an enjoyable visit, occasionally with an overnight.
(FAO mickd....I was a runner-well jogger in those days and it was always a treat to go for a run from my hotel in St Helier)

On this occasion I was planning to fly there (from B’ham) and return same day as I needed to be elsewhere the following day. Unfortunately my early morning flight to Jersey was diverted to Guernsey as Jersey was fog bound.

So we landed and awaited in their airport terminal. Time passed by and eventually there was an announcement that there would be a flight returning to B’ham shortly, but that would be the last one. Those passengers not wishing to take it would be put up in a hotel in Guersney and ‘island hopped’ to Jersey in the morning.

Sadly, owing to commitments the following day I took the flight home.

So I have been to Guernsey but spent all day in the airport terminal !

I understand that such a situation with one island being fog bound is not unusual ?

Hi Prando,

That is a shame, the island is not as big as Jersey however, it is not as commercialised so is enjoyed by thousands who visit annually. It was voted the best cruise stop off (I believe in Europe) a couple of years ago. We get many (80 to 90) cruise ships visit annually (well we did until Corona Virus) whereas our near neighbours get very few, I think that is because Jersey it is more like a mini England and so more commercialised than Guernsey. That said we do, me and the other half, go across the water at least once a year for a nose around.

The other thing Guernsey has that Jersey does not, is the Bailiwick of Guernsey constists of a number of islands, Herm, Alderney, Sark and Jethou, so it can make for a far more interesting visit than our sister island. Of course Guernsey is not for everyone, but if you like Devon and Cornwall the south coast of Guernsey is remarkably similar to that part of the UK, so Mick, your comments somewhat surprise me, but perhaps you like the busier places, so I see Jersey might be a preference. As I say I actually quite like Jersey myself.

They built a new airport terminal here around 2006, so it might have been you were held up in the old one, which to be honest, having worked for a number of years in both, (I am saying no more than that) I actually preferred the atmosphere of the old terminal, but it was dated and not conducive to a comfortable stay if you were fogbound.

Fog can be an issue here, but our own airline now has fog busting equipped aircraft so they land using a visual simulator, (don’t ask as I know nothing more than I would not want to be on a plane being flown that way) so apparently fog delays will be greatly lessoned. We do have very few international flights from here, Jersey has more, though most locals go to the UK for onward travel. That in itself can increase the price of a holiday, given the cost of travel off the island and a overstay in and outbound of the UK.

Thanks bmg. My ‘stay’ was pre 2006 and your comment regarding it being ‘dated’ seems to confirm my memories !
