    FAO Baggiemadguern

Just read your post relating to Guernsey bmg buddy. Thought I would relate a story about my visit there !

In my working life (I retired 12 years ago) I used to visit a customer in Jersey once a year. Always an enjoyable visit, occasionally with an overnight.
(FAO mickd....I was a runner-well jogger in those days and it was always a treat to go for a run from my hotel in St Helier)

On this occasion I was planning to fly there (from B’ham) and return same day as I needed to be elsewhere the following day. Unfortunately my early morning flight to Jersey was diverted to Guernsey as Jersey was fog bound.

So we landed and awaited in their airport terminal. Time passed by and eventually there was an announcement that there would be a flight returning to B’ham shortly, but that would be the last one. Those passengers not wishing to take it would be put up in a hotel in Guersney and ‘island hopped’ to Jersey in the morning.

Sadly, owing to commitments the following day I took the flight home.

So I have been to Guernsey but spent all day in the airport terminal !

I understand that such a situation with one island being fog bound is not unusual ?

We were on a Med cruise which commenced in Barcelona. We met a family from Jersey who hadn't joined the ship until the 2nd port in Nice. Their flight from Jersey to Gatwick had been cancelled because of fog which meant they missed the connection to Barcelona. They said fog was a common problem.

Is it possible to get many international flights from the CI or do you have to get to the mainland first?

One of my worst ever airport delays was a 6 hour hiatus at Jersey Airport.

I’m probably in a minority but I really didn’t like Guernsey but I really enjoy Jersey.

Sorry 9goals, I think I partially answered your question on another thread.

We have a few, mainly charter flights in here, German, Dutch etc but only a addhock international to France, albeit there are ferry sailing directly and via Jersey to France which is closer to here that the uk is.

Jersey do have more international flights but even they do. It have many.

Fog in both islands is an issue, sometimes it can hand around for a few days at a time so usually now the ferry company will help out and get people moving.

I recall a few years ago we were due to fly out of Gatwick to Turkey and the fog came down the day before were were due out to LGW. Were offed and ummed about getting the evening ferry to Poole and elected to do that in the end so not to lose our holiday. We caught the ferry and holed up in Poole in a Premier Inn, then got a fixed fare taxi to Gatwick. Four the five of us it cost an extra £500 and when we got to Gatwick the following mid morning we found out our flight had been on time and landed at 7:40am.

Expensive night away I guess but we had a great holiday non-the-less. That is a downside of living on a small island, but a small price to pay on the hole I guess.
