    The Highways England Advert

Uses a catchy remake of Go West (Left) to encourage drivers in trouble to steer left into conveniently located refuge areas.
Not only is it dangerous driving to cut across lanes when you have no control over your malfunctioning vehicle, but the tone of the advert is trying to make driving on smart motorways a whole lot of fun. For those who've lost people due to these deathtraps it must be extremely distressing.
Whoever dreamt this up should get their cards ASAP.

Remember, though, somebody thought up the idea of ‘smart motorways’ in the first place. In truth, of course, ‘smart motorways’ are just the cheap alternative to doing the job properly and widening the road to include a hard shoulder. Any fool could see that it would cost lives, well, of course, there were some fools that either didn’t or thought that the financial saving was worth a few lives......!

Can't really disagree about the concept of Smart Motorways, but in the event of a mechanical failure what do you suggest the driver do ?

The driver would have to make a decision. If he had reduced power, he could signal left and try to make an exit or refuge area. If he'd lost power completely put on the hazards and coast to a halt. If he's in the outside lane then get out onto the central reservation.
To advise people to go left in all situations is madness.
