I think the most recent signings were a telling sign that Neal Ardley had lost his way and either couldn't see or wasn't willing to admit to himself what was wrong. The over-reliance on Doyle and lack of competition for places in midfield was the obvious problem, plus the failure to replace the goal-poaching ability of Kristian Dennis. Inih Effiong, Kenton Richardson and one or two other recent signings were not the answer to those issues and had something of a "fiddling while Rome burns" feel to them.
