This option is not always available.

You would think height alone would be enough to be an effective target man. But it really isn’t.

I think the most recent signings were a telling sign that Neal Ardley had lost his way and either couldn't see or wasn't willing to admit to himself what was wrong. The over-reliance on Doyle and lack of competition for places in midfield was the obvious problem, plus the failure to replace the goal-poaching ability of Kristian Dennis. Inih Effiong, Kenton Richardson and one or two other recent signings were not the answer to those issues and had something of a "fiddling while Rome burns" feel to them.

Kenton Richardson’s dreadful performance against Halifax could earn him the right-back spot in our one-hit blunders XI, captained, of course, by Guy Branston and with Brian Parkin in goal.

We really shouldn't be signing players of this ilk in the first place. In the past few years I've lost count of how many loan signings (who have played 10 minutes for their own club) have come here to get game time. The worst example has to be Virtue-Thick from Li'pool who contributed nothing. I commend IB for sending them back and bringing the squad back to a "core group" who he can work with.

Feet or into space, it’s not always an option. We did well yesterday and well done to IB for making the required changes during the game.

Particularly at this level, a physical presence is required more often than not. Frequently, balls are going to be played forward that are 50/50 in terms of the attacking team securing possession.

Whilst not disagreeing with the substance of your post, Mr Woodsetts, have you copped how well Virtue-Thick has done this season with Blackpool? Maybe the fault was with HOW we played him.

Saw him down at Colchester in a 1-3 win I think - great box-to-box midfield performance that showed what he can do (that he didn't show in other games to be fair)
