He did say it. The context of how he said it can be interpreted a few different ways. I believe in the conversation it was a "i dont care what you did in the 80s, i care about making us successful now" (not exact quotes) which you could argue is the right attitude to have so as to not get blinded by chasing the glory days that will NEVER be repeated.
