One could argue we've replaced Shankland with McNulty and McNulty with (hopefully) Niskanen.

I would argue that we've only now finally replaced McMullen with Niskanen and so far we have not replaced Shankland. We're one striker down currently from what we had last season.

Club’s never recovered from Ron Yeats departure quite frankly.

The game was up the pole when Walter Carlyle left for Motherwell.
Wato Kuate was the closest we came to replacing him.

Robson had some good moments but on the whole his default was to hoof it up the line and fall on his arse. This inevitably never found a Utd man and the ball usually came back with interest. I think McCann will be a better fit in to the way Tam wants to play AND allow others to play on the front foot.
McCann bombing up the left to receive a pass from Levitt might be another key piece slotted into Tams jigsaw puzzle, likewise the Finn may be the answer on the right.
On the face of it, we're not far away, Fuchs and Butcher allowing Levitt and Pawlett to create might work.
Whether these moves allow McNulty etc to play his A game remains to be seen, or it may well be that a big target man is needed
I accept the jigsaw isnt built yet and thus we cant see the full picture but I have to say the fog is starting to clear and it defo looks brighter than it did under Mellon.
Whether it's enough for top 6 we'll see but we look to have enough to be at least 9th or better
