And by the way strathmore is consistently voted best course in Scotland under £50
So as usual you’re way of the mark with that assessment
Times mst have changed at Downfield GC.
I was a member from 1966 until 2005 inclusive and the winter greens at the 5th and 6th hole were only in operation annually from the end of October until the end of March at the latest.

The biggest problem with Downfield GC is that they have few drawn competitions on a Saturday or Sunday throughout the playing season.
Members prefer to play with their friends every Saturday and/or Sunday in the sweep or Medal stroke play competitions.
This makes it very difficult for a new member to get a game of golf on a Saturday or Sunday unless they play later in the afternoon when the course is quieter.
This set up gives the impression that the club is unfriendly.
Despite being a member of Downfield GC for 39 years there were a lot of members that I never knew until I saw their death notice in the Courier stating that they were a member of Downfield GC.
In my opinion all stroke play competitions and sweeps should be drawn otherwise it is open to abuse amongst people playing in these competitions with their friends.

Those courses are ‘outing’ courses and rely on visitors for survival at the expense of the members.

Never had a problem at Downfield.

    Perhaps it’s you.

Don’t see the problem playing with friends at your golf club. Can you imagine being in a drawn competition with someone moaning about mats, greens and the membership every week?

If you want to play with strangers every week plenty ‘opens’ available for that.

    Cheaters will always cheat.

Drumoig has the big 5 tourneys as draws, normal medal you can just book a time.

    Good balance

Drumoig also gets a fair influx of Downfield members in the winter, around 30 odd I think.

This season 5th and 6th definitely winter greens till end of may , you could see the flags from the Coupar Angus road , two of my work mates are still members there , and said that greens had looked okay from mid April but the green keeper refused to put them back into use , the only good thing about downfield is Barry Smith and the pro shop which is excellent

Yer mates talking shyte. They were temporary greens due to damage.

I would trust greenkeepers knowledge before Joe Public.

Every golf club is full of ‘experts’ on any given subject regarding the course/club but never go on committees.

Ffs are temporary greens not the same as winter greens ? Surely winter greens are temporary greens?
I see why you would get all defensive about your club , but it’s not a patch on other clubs I’ve been a member of , the first year I was a member I got an e Mail about high teas , I thought that sounds excellent so I invited my 2 brothers and their wives and two mates and wives as well , it was shocking they sat us in what looked like a make shift works can**** they put together tables with plastic sheets as table cloths and the food was awful , and then they told us to eat and drink up they were closing soon , when got an hour it was embarrassing after inviting friends , saying that the girls in mornings made decent bacon rolls are were friendly the only friendly people in the place

notso stated that Downfield was an unfriendly Club and I was explaining the reason why. I know people who have joined Downfield Golf Club who have had great difficulty getting a regular game of golf at the weekend because the members who proposed and seconded them for membership played in their own groups at the weekend.
I remember playing in a drawn stroke play competition on a Sunday morning when I was a member of Downfield GC.
There were members playing in the competition who I had never met before despite me having been a member for over 25 years at that time.
These Downfield GC members only played golf on a Sunday morning hence the reason I had never met them because I played golf on a Sunday afternoon all the year round unless the course was closed usually because it was covered in snow.
