That part of the Downfield golf course is particularly prone to being covered in snow and ice when the rest of the course has little or no snow on it. The problem is the tall trees which prevent the low sun during the winter months shining on the fairways and melting the snow.
One winter when I was a Downfield GC member there was a fall of snow followed by a slight thaw. There was a hard frost overnight and the melted snow turned to ice. The effects of the sun which managed to shine through the trees at the 5th and 6th holes onto the ice managed to burn the grass below the ice.
This is the same way as using a magnifying glass during sunny weather to burn a hole in a sheet of paper.
This is possibly why there were temporary greens on the 5h and 6th greens during the spring of this year.

I see why you would get all defensive about your club , but it’s not a patch on other clubs I’ve been a member of , the first year I was a member I got an e Mail about high teas , I thought that sounds excellent so I invited my 2 brothers and their wives and two mates and wives as well , it was shocking they sat us in what looked like a make shift works can**** they put together tables with plastic sheets as table cloths and the food was awful , and then they told us to eat and drink up they were closing soon , when got an hour it was embarrassing after inviting friends , saying that the girls in mornings made decent bacon rolls are were friendly the only friendly people in the place
When I was a member of Downfield GC the green keeping staff used to begin towards the end of September each year cutting the winter/temporary greens for the period from the beginning of November until the middle of March.
When did you have your poor experience regarding your high tea and did you submit a complaint to the management of the golf club.
What you describe for your high tea does not sound like the dining room of Downfield Golf Club which is very nice and well maintained.

Don't start throwing facts into the debate.

Winter greens are on when damage would be caused by walking on frosty greens. Those were temporary greens whilst the main greens were recovering. Nothing to do with being defensive about anything just trying to explain where you’re wrong.

The catering like most clubs is a franchise so blame them.

I think you’ve found the right club for you now. Less moaners now.

He obviously got bombed out of Downfield and is lashing out at everyone and everything about the club.

One of the best clubs for less than £50 a round will be getting the same treatment soon enough.

Golf clubs need members who will be part of the club for years not nomads.

The damage is done if the greens are played whilst thawing.......playing on a frozen green dosent actually damage it.....just not great fun.

It's the roots that are damaged if they are played on whilst thawing.

Hence so many clubs had temp/winter greens last year as it was such a deep and prolonged frost that took weeks to thaw.

Drumoig lost their 7th green and it's now in the process of being moved 30 yards north to higher ground where it will get a bit more winter sun.

FAO Islay......example of how much better new hcap system is, back to back gross 79s fri and sat with casual rounds has took my hcap from 7.6 to 6.9.....much better imho and more fun than old system.

Just a wee add on, surely a golf club is about it's members, the comps and the course.......having good catering is just an added bonus but wouldn't be a deal breaker for me joining.

Strathmore as I say though is excellent.

Downfield had winter greens in May.

    An ex member said so.

Food might be good but not course conditions.

Not a great test of golf.
