It's the roots that are damaged if they are played on whilst thawing.

Hence so many clubs had temp/winter greens last year as it was such a deep and prolonged frost that took weeks to thaw.

Drumoig lost their 7th green and it's now in the process of being moved 30 yards north to higher ground where it will get a bit more winter sun.

FAO Islay......example of how much better new hcap system is, back to back gross 79s fri and sat with casual rounds has took my hcap from 7.6 to 6.9.....much better imho and more fun than old system.
The main problem I can see with the new handicap system which was introduced in 1983 is that it has turned the top golfers in each golf club into ‘one club wonders’.
Prior to 1983 Category One golfers which were golfers with a playing handicap of 4 or less who had to submit cards from other golf courses for 40% of their scores.
This meant that Category One golfers used to play in Open Competitions at other golf clubs to try to keep their Category One handicap.
Now there are members of golf clubs who have a playing handicap of +1 and +2 but they only have to play in stroke play competitions on their own home golf course to keep their handicap.
I used to play golf at Downfield with a member who was also a member of Abertay GC and a fellow Dundee supporter. He is now sadly in the high stand.
My friend used to tell me that the women in Abertay GC had obtained their handicap playing on Ashludie golf course but they could not play within ten strokes of their handicap when they played on Monifieth Medal golf course.

But to say strathmore Is in poor condition is just nonsense and you know it Noah
How do you find climbing up the hill from the 14th green to the 15th tee at Downfield.

    An ex member said so.
Apparently two winter greens out of a total of 18 greens due to severe weather in the second half of last winter.
Anyone driving up Coupar Angus Road to Birkhill during the winter months will often see through the trees the sixth fairway on Downfield golf course covered in snow. The fifth fairway from the top of the hill to the 5th green is also often covered in snow.
When was a member at Downfield I can often remember the 5th and 6th holes being closed because they were snowbound whilst the rest of the course was open.
That was back in the days before the Health and Safety brigade took over resulting in the course being closed if there was a sight covering of snow or there had been a hard frost overnight.
The simple solution would be to install undersoil heating which would end the need for winter/temporary greens during the winter months.

    Part of whs.

    Ie my handicap is 6.9 x 125 ÷ 113 at drumoig

    Downfield.....6.9 x 133 ÷ 113 at Downfield

Takes into account difficulty of course.....113 is constant, every course and every tee now has a slope rating......drumoig green 121, yellow (medal) 125.
