Thread: Any tried these chip shops

  1. #11
Restaurant rather than chippy but fish is usually my 1st choice when I eat out.

A group of us eat at the local Con Club 1st Friday of the month. If we call Chef on a Thursday and confirm he knows what we like. He visits Portslade fish market crack of dawn Friday and cooks it up for lunch. John Dory is my favourite. Served up with a small portion of chips but the waiters are there to serve you with more piping hot. Nice touch. Washed down with a pint of Dark Star. Lovely.

Fish & Chips down here are so expensive. Our nearest is decent but at 8 or 9 quid for cod & chips it should be. What's a bag cost in the Black Country?

When I lived in West Brom chippy by the Gough's Arms was always our go to. But I am talking 1970's. Still there?

White wine with fish and chips, please!

I used to work with a bloke, he was grossly overweight, who had a serious cholesterol problem. Every morning and afternoon a trolley would come round with sandwiches and snacks and this bloke would have a couple of rolls with double cheese but would put chopped raw onion in them as he insisted that the onion reduced the cholesterol! He was still alive when I left. Another huge bloke at my last job would have a mountain of a fry up for breakfast in the company restaurant and accompany it with a can of Diet Coke! Gave us a laugh, at least!

Hi, Fish and Chips are a treat to us, we only have them perhaps 3 or 4 times a year.
I was craving for them after lockdown and we went to Bewdley and sat by the river wow did we enjoy them and being in the fresh air.
Both my wife and similar plain tastes, we haven't tried curry or Chinese and I've never had a McDonalds or KFC.
We eat healthy at home, never chips or microwave, but when we have a Pub meal it's usually Scampi or fish and chips.

If you want to eat healthily at home with chips, buy an Air Fryer, only requires a tiny amount oil, I use rapeseed oil, they’re really good. You can cook other stuff in them, too, mine is a Phillips, recommended.

I like a piece of Haddock and chips from the Village Wall Heath on Friday nights. We have them delivered by just eat as I am an idle barsteward.
The Haddock is massive and you get a load of chips.
I always finish the Haddock but I haven't finished all the chips yet.
Majors is another good one, so is Scoffs in Roseville.
The Blue Submarine on the Russells Hall estate is said to be the best but we haven't tried them yet.

Love Scoffs, used to be a regular when I lived down the road, great chips. The Frying Scotsman at the top of Upper Church Lane, Tipton used to be another good one but haven't been there since we moved, years ago. Does it still exist?

I haven't been in the Scotsman for about fifty years, we used to call on the way back from the Brewer and Baker.
Charlies in upper gornal was good, but it's changed hands and is called Finn's. Haven't been in under the new owners.
Chinese and curries i could live without but not fish n chips.

Looks like the Scotsman is now called The Princes End Fryer. Although I used to live on Upper Church Lane I never made it into the Brewer and Baker for some reason and they closed it on me. The pub I really regret never going in was the ancient looking place that was on the corner of Church Lane and the High Street, can't remember the name, it was a decrepit looking place for years. There is a Greggs Bakery Outlet on the site now.

Talking of Chinese I noticed that Lo's is still there on the High Street just a bit further down from the Fryer. Basic takeaway,, good and cheap, must have been there for nearly forty years now!
