We need to ensure history isn’t erased or re written to support a particular agenda, you have to learn from the mistakes of the past to avoid making them again! For me adding a plaque to a statue that explains who the person was warts and all is better than throwing it in a dock.

As such, I totally agree, many should not remain in public places and should be relocated to museums where people can learn more about their backgrounds and put them in context. Other statues are more problematic-Churchill for example. Churchill,'s writings show him to be very much of his time and he believed in eugenics and showed racist beliefs for example. His treatment of India both over the famine and Partition is indefensible yet without him the outcome of world war 2 might have been very different. On balance, however, I believe he should still be celebrated for his impact on the latter .The trick is to ensure that more people are aware of the whole truth, both good and bad-but this is not always that easy. As Churchill himself recognised-"history is written by the victors".
For the most part the evolution of human history is littered with war, famine war, barbarity to others, rape of countries by stronger nations, plagues and shyte in general. As a species, that is our history...some atrocious acts carried out in the name of this or that...
No question about that.....and at any given time certain things were the norm that we no longer see today as the norm....tall that is fine.
But every country is currently going through their own turmoil with dealing with their past ...Fcku me...here in Ireland we have to deal with the Church raping young orphaned children and then burying them in in unmarked dump grounds......children been persecuted for been children and nobody but a few very brave individuals attempting to stand up for their rights...in a time when children had no rights...While acceptable back then...it most certainly is not accepted today and should not be honored with statues......

Oh and by the way...while the act was illegal...any action can be made illegal by the establishment but not necessarily enforced.
Look at the raft of broken laws during the pandemic by the ruling class of elites today......while you go about been a good boy and girl doing your bit for the good of the country...Worse fool you.......
My memory is good and long and those elites can still be heard laughing at how they saddled future generations with huge debt after bailing out all their friends in 2008....and you want to get pyssed by people who have had enough of inequality.....
I have posted before my hiatus from this forum, that a massive change is coming...WEATHER YOU ARE PREPARED OR NOT........

Truly hope that you are right. I have felt for a long while that the biggest issue in this country is the ever growing divide between rich and poor and how the top very few percent own such a large proportion of the nations wealth. Maybe some of the issues brought to light by this pandemic might have opened people's eyes a bit more-but I doubt very much that things will change as the majority are simply too apathetic (as others on here have noted).

The top echelons of the Tory Party have no real understanding of the challenges "ordinary" people face and tbh I don't think they even really care. No one sane would want a return to the bad old days of the 70s with over-powerful unions hamstringing industry but De-nationalizing certain sectors just made rich individuals richer as they took on these newly privatised companies and were then later allowed to make even more profit by selling off even key utilitiy companies to foreign investors. This took money out of the country as well as arguably creating a risk to the UK but as long as these people could put more money into their off shore accounts who cares.

The same old issues over affordable housing, a living wage and the state of the Nhs and education system persist as they did decades ago. Sadly though most will still be deflected by stories about illegal immigrants or benefit cheats (or Corrie/Eastenders &#128516 and not see the true crime behind all this. As for the millions wasted on HS2 and the various failed military contracts that have come to light recently this beggars belief too. If only we had a decent opposition party we might have chance. Sadly, you need both time and money to get into politics and this naturally excludes the vast majority of ordinary working people so you are left with those who are independently wealthy or else those who are sponsored by the unions. There are exceptions but not many. Can't see how this will change though and is just part and parcel of western democracy-though still better than the alternatives. Hey ho, "Power to the people!" as Wolfie Smith used to say🙄

I find the Angel of the North offensive as it does not depict male or female so one would presume it’s a IT or THEY. It’s spoiling the definition of Angels to our little children!

Would I be cleared if I took a hammer or paint spray to this offensive pile of s hit?

Surely in this country there can’t be one rule for one and not the other?

What about all the industrialists who made mega money from creating jobs, goods and wealth for the country and the world on the back of child labour and poor working conditions for their employees. Can’t see them being ‘attacked’ for ‘abusing’ our ancestors.

    Where does it all stop?

We need to be very careful about what history we are erasing because despite what some think it wasn’t just about black slaves. You have to say the world has done very well by all the invention and developments driven across the world from this small island throughout history but especially on the back of the industrial revolution.

Our history is something to be proud of, despite its faults.

But that is precisely the way it is baggiel....and always has been...but with modern tech and people becoming more empowered they are beginning to assert it in everyday life.
This began happening in East Europe about 2 years before the collapse of the Soviet empire and once it took hold...it spread rapidly..
Do not for a moment think it can not happen in the western "democracies".....we are entering fast moving times.......unpredictable times......the law you speak of is in place to safeguard the elite ruling classes across the globe....it too is part of the globalization of the world....
And don't start me on finding things offensive.......but thats another story.....

Yam...the point is at that time that was acceptable in society so send children up chimneys and industrial factories. But as society evolved...laws evolved to protect children.....but at that time it wa acceptable to do this....It was the same with slavery...at that time....
But small voices spoke even back then against slavery and child abuse..until finally it became more acceptable to have working rights and age limits imposed....this is societal evolution....no government can stand in its way...when people move for change...politicians better beware......
Today the dynamics are slightly different and I think it was Roosevelt warned about the industrial complexes taking control of national policies....he was spot on back then.....Now multinationals/big pharma/big tech have huge policy influence in national governments...

THIS WILL NOT END WELL FOR EVERYBODY....
