I was saying to my old man Watt is a really skillful player but he has no pace, is one footed, and doesn't win things in the air, and then he won a flick and put in a peach with his left foot for the goal! I do stand by some of that though, he is a good player, but his signing doesn't address the lack of pace up top and through the team, runners with the ball to take us up the park, and strength up top to make the ball stick. It makes us so one dimensional in how we can play, and has been needing addressed for 2 seasons now.

You look at St Mirren and Ross County the past two games and they can create a chance with three direct passes (not punts) what we are trying to do in 15-20 passes, just by having a bit of pace in their team, and in the case of County having the winger and ****ey Whitey up top.

Fairness to Freeman, he got forward last night.

It was a game of 45 minutes each imo. We had the first 30 minutes and the last 15 while they had the bit in the middle.

Butcher had a couple of really good games at centre half in the Championship when called on, seem to remember one the games against one the hammer throwers ross county or Inverness when he was winning everything in the air they threw at us, and of course when he stepped back when Connolly got injured in the 6-2, so I'm quite happy to have him as back up. Slightly confused however that he didn't manage to get booked last night.

Have to disagree with a lot of that.

Watt actually outpaced their RB in a straight race and Watt had the ball! Plus Watt bring a whole lot more which compensates for any shortcomings he might have. He's the kind of player we've been crying out for. Big, strong, committed, can take a goal and as you see last night can create as well.
Then you say we've no pace but Freeman does?
Glass has what you and I are looking for but the manager won't give him a run of starts.

I agree with the bit about not attacking quickly enough on the turnover though.

Butcher did really well last night.
Re no getting booked I would guess that the club have warned him that he won't have a future at the club unless he can improve his disciplinary record.

Great video of the winner from last night. Watch Watt give Charles-Cook the ‘Get It Right Up Ye’ FAF.

I don't see much pace at all in our team.

I think I can see where TC is coming from. He likes his team to retain possession. Especially, when we have a lot of teams that like to sit in and hit us on the break. He wants us to pick a way through the defence and convert.

But, the problem we have with that is that we are so vulnerable to the break-away and, as a previous poster pointed out, we lack pace. In every area of the park.

Sometimes in Scottish Football, when a team is sitting in like StMirren or County, It's worthwhile cracking in a few, hard long-range shots from just outside the 18 yard box.One of them may fly in the top corner, most will be blocked, but if you have 2 or 3 forwards running into the box looking for the 2nd ball it can create absolute havoc in defences and they can start to lose their composure, maybe conceding a penalty or an own goal.

I understand Tam's thinking. I think. And I agree that we should be aiming for the 'gold standard'. But whilst we are playing with a 1st team that has no established decent midfield playmaker, we should be be prepared to mix it up a bit more a game than we currently do. Just have a wee gamble with a shot and run (into the box).

Apart from that (above) I honestly think McNulty is a Brian Graham MkII. He gets himself into goal-scoring positions frequently, but doesn't have the composure or never-say-die attitude to convert. It's so frustrating to watch.

Last night he was on the shoulder of one of their CBs when a ball was (uncharacteristically) punted forward right into the area in front and centre of their 18yrd box. McNulty sees the ball coming and breaks away from the CB as if the CB is gonna (blindly) back header it towards his own keeper. Whereas, the result of McNulty's magical lightning move was to give the CB all the time and space to clear everything up nicely thank you very much.

Let's ditch this 'emperor's new clothes' thing once and for all. McNulty is Tom Kite.

    THIS!

Ok, you might not score, but if you have shots from that distance the defence has to make the decision to step out to block the 3rd/4th/5th attempt, which in turn opens up space in the defence for a through ball

Never realised what a good player Tony Watt is until now. Never paid him much attention at all before he pulled on a United shirt though tbf. Strong, direct, skilful and looks like he's gonna take no **** from the opposition. With him, Butcher and McMann in the side, at least we have a bit of steel now.
